LET THE GAMES BEGIN: The White House attacked the International Olympic Committee as too scandal-ridden to police the sports world's drug problem. The IOC shot back at American ``hypocrisy'' that ignored its own drug problem - starting with Mark McGwire. The sharp exchanges came on Tuesday's opening of the IOC's summit on drugs in sports, a meeting that has become overshadowed by the biggest corruption scandal in the history of the games.

BLACK DAY FOR JACK: Angels right-hander Jack McDowell underwent arthroscopic surgery on his pitching shoulder to repair damage to his rotator cuff and labrum. McDowell, who re-signed with the Angels in December for $500,000, will begin rehabilitation in seven to 10 days.

A HALLMARK MOMENT: L.A. Superior Court Judge David A. Horowitz approved the settlement of a lawsuit Monday filed by former Dodgers catcher Mike Scioscia and ex-umpire John Kibler against Hallmark greeting cards. The pair was awarded an undisclosed sum to be paid by Hallmark, which used their likenesses in a card without their permission.

EXTRA, EXTRA: Falcons coach Dan Reeves and several players reacted with shock and anger to a New York Times story that quoted players saying anonymously that free safety Eugene Robinson wasn't the only player last week to visit a seedy area of Miami rife with prostitution and drugs. ``Guys had been going there all week,'' the Times quoted a Falcons starter as saying. ``It's just that Eugene was the only one who got caught.'' Reeves said he heard nothing on the topic from his players.

HODDLE SACKED: Under mounting criticism following an alleged remark about disabled people, Glenn Hoddle was fired as soccer-mad England's soccer coach. The Football Association dismissed him three days after The Times of London quoted Hoddle as saying the disabled were ``paying for the sins of an earlier life.''
