 'BICES' IN ASIA AT THE FOUR SEASONS CHINZAN-SO HOTEL IN TOKYO
 TOKYO, Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- "Bice" (pronounce 'be-chay') -- the first "quality" Italian restaurant group to encircle the globe -- becomes today the first top flight restaurant collection to expand into the Orient, when a lavish new resort complex, the Four Seasons Chinzan- So Hotel, opens in Tokyo.
 According to Roberto Ruggeri, with his brother Remo a co-owner of Bice International, a family owned company, the new restaurant will establish a world precedent. "But it shall succeed," said Ruggeri, who flew over from Bice's International headquarters in New York for the opening. "The Japanese and the Italians have remarkably similar tastebuds. They appreciate noodles and we Italians love pasta -- which are very much the same thing".
 Satellite Bice restaurants opened next in Chicago and Beverly Hills, In Washington, D.C. and Palm Beach and were a hit. So, too, were new Bices in Paris, France...in Atlanta, Scottsdale, San Diego and Montreal, Canada. A Bice will soon open in both London and Sydney, Australia. Beautiful Kyoto will host the second Bice in Japan. Total so far: eleven.
 Lovers of international cuisine with Northern Italian flair aren't surprised at Japan's invitation to Bice to recreate for them the delicious Lombardy specialities served by the Ruggeri brothers' own mother back in Milan in 1926 in the first Bice restaurant.
 Then as now, Mama Bice's sensational cooking attracted both traditionalists and the fashion capital's cognoscenti. But today Roberto is in charge and the high-fashion clothing and interior design people continue to lead the way to Bice's banquettes.
 Since 1986, when Roberto was able to bring Bice over the Atlantic to New York, its name, and cutting edge cuisine has taken off. The first American Bice was an instant hit on East 54th Street ("still buzzing" after four years, according to the 1992 edition of the Zagat New York Restaurant Survey, "thanks to very good food and an Armani crowd").
 In Tokyo, the fine Italian hand belongs to Florentine-born Mario Maggi, 47, who was for the last four years the Chicago Bice's head chef. From now on he will preside over a kitchen catering to 110 multinational guests at a time, in two private rooms, and a main diningroom with 88 seats at the Chinzan-So Bice.
 A measure of the Asian Bice's luxurious new setting is that it is just one of four "alternative" cuisines offered in the hotel, as well as the choicest Japanese cooking. All the new restaurants are within a hotel complex that includes a Shinto wedding chapel and over-sized standard rooms equipped with three two-line telephones, a fax machine and computers -- thus catering to facets of Japanese culture as well as the needs of the international business community. All is integrated into thirteen levels, and was designed by a firm that has won awards for environmental and cultural sensitivity in hotel design: Wimberley Allison Tong & Goo.
