TOP GOLFERS SHARE THE CADILLAC LIMELIGHT

DETROIT, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Golf stars Fred Couples and Lee Trevino will soon have more than their professional success in common, when they star in commercials for the Cadillac Seville Touring Sedan (STS) and De Ville models. Beginning Feb. 5, each will be featured in the newest Cadillac commercials airing nationally on sporting events and other programming.
Cadillac, America's luxury car sales leader for the 44th year in a row, has traditionally associated with spokespeople considered the best in their particular field. Couples and Trevino recently received 1992 Player of the Year honors from both the Golf Writers Association of America and their peers, who named them PGA Tour Player of the Year and Senior PGA Tour Player of the Year, respectively. The two also were the leading money winners on their respective tours.
According to Peter Levin, Cadillac director of advertising, both golfers are natural spokesmen for Cadillac because of their professional achievements and because they represent the demographic profiles of prestige luxury market and large luxury market customers.
"It's a very good fit for us," explained Levin. "It allows us to target two market segments where our outstanding products compete in association with two terrific spokesmen who'll identify well with those markets and demographics."
In the commercials, Couples talks about the Northstar-powered STS, while Trevino touts Cadillac's De Ville model, America's best-selling luxury car.
The STS, with its potent 295-horsepower Northstar engine, has won recognition from a number of prestigious automotive and related publications including: Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Automobile Magazine, Consumers Digest and AAA World. The STS appeals largely to young, affluent buyers typically in the 30- to 50-year-old age group. In the commercial, the 33-year-old Couples is shown hitting a fairway shot, then coming out of a bunker while a voice-over describes his prowess. The commercial ends when Couples addresses the camera, then drives off in an STS as the voice-over describes the attributes of the Northstar System.
Couples became a Cadillac spokesman last May. Trevino, by comparison, is a veteran at Cadillac commercials. He was featured in a memorable 1991 De Ville commercial that ended with the line, "Is this a great country or what?"
The new :30 commercial opens with Trevino practicing on a green and transitions to him walking around his Sedan de Ville. After a voice- over introduction, Trevino talks about winning and says De Ville was the country's number-one luxury car when he started the tour and, because it keeps getting better, is still number one today. The commercial ends with Trevino inside the De Ville delivering another sure-to-be-memorable line, "Believe me, there's one thing that never gets old...and that's winning."
The two commercials were shot at the Mission Hills, Big Horn and Morning Side golf courses in the Palm Springs, Calif., area and will be seen nationally on network and cable television. They were created for Cadillac by D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles/Bloomfield Hills (DMB&B/BH).
"It's great to sponsor the two best and most successful players on the PGA and Senior PGA tours, and to be able to associate their success with the success of a wide range of potential new Cadillac owners," Levin said.
Cadillac has been one of two exclusive Masters sponsors for 25 years and began umbrella sponsorship of the Senior PGA Tour in 1990. Other Cadillac-sponsored golfers include George Archer, Jim Colbert, Jim Dent, Al Geiberger, Dave Stockton and many others who represent the automaker on the Senior PGA Tour. They give golf tips in Cadillac-sponsored vignettes during coverage of the Cadillac Series -- 17 ESPN-televised events -- and wear the Cadillac wreath and crest.
