 underground water main that left a dozen businesses and about 50 residences without water for a couple of hours Thursday could close a busy segment of Topanga Canyon Boulevard into the weekend.

As thousands of gallons of water spilled out from the ruptured 12-inch pipe just north of Bassett Street about 2 p.m., crews from the Department of Water and Power and fire officials shut off the water and diverted di·vert

``I first thought, oh my God, I've got this on my head, but then I thought there are a lot of possibilities,'' McLaughlin said. Long found her solution in the water cooler, using bottled water to rinse the dye from McLaughlin's hair.

 Chapa, who lives on Schoolcraft Street, laughed as she spoke about her 3- and 5-year-old sons jumping into a wheelbarrow filled with water in their back yard to cool off.

``Because we don't have a pool, I had to do something,'' she said.

At about 5 p.m., officials opened up the southbound side of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, just north of Vanowen Street, for travel.
