SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Additional firefighters were assigned Monday to Santa Clarita for the fifth straight day as hot, dry, breezy days continued.

School children played indoors again at recess at some local schools where policy prohibits play outdoors when the temperature tops 100 degrees.

Today, the National Weather Service promises - as best it can - some relief.

After a weekend where the mercury hit 112 degrees in Valencia, and 108 on Monday, today's highs are expected to remain in the double-digits, topping out in the mid-90s, according to the weather service.

Firefighters have been on alert in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California.
