TOO CLOSE TO CALL: ANGELS MISS CHANCE TO MOVE INTO 1ST : CHICAGO WHITE SOX 14, ANGELS 12.

Byline: Marc J. Spears Daily News Staff Writer

Many Angels fans cheered as the final score ``Milwaukee 2, Seattle 1'' was displayed on the Anaheim Stadium JumboTron in the second inning.

But it wasn't because they were hopeful their club would hold the division lead for the first time since June 10. Rather, the Angels were already down 8-0 to the Chicago White Sox The Chicago White Sox are a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The White Sox are a member of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the White Sox have played in U.S.  and the fans were ecstatic that their half-game Mariner deficit couldn't worsen.

The Angels, however, almost fooled their followers and probably themselves by overcoming a franchise-record nine-run deficit to tie the game before falling 14-12 to Chicago in front of 23,297.

With White Sox runners on first and second with no outs in the ninth, Dave Martinez

Despite the loss, the Angels had a monstrous game by Todd Greene Todd Anthony Greene (born May 8, 1971 in Augusta, Georgia) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who is currently a free agent. While the Angels' offense was hot, All-Star Jason Dickson

       was not.

Dickson's troubles began from the the start as he allowed three runs, three walks and threw 33 pitches in the first inning. Eight White Sox in all came to the plate and the right-hander was aided by an inning-ending double play.

The second was almost twice as worse for Dickson, as Chicago scored five more runs off him to take an 8-0 cushion. The rookie's last batter was Mike Cameron Michael Terrance Cameron (born January 8 1973 in LaGrange, Georgia) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball with the San Diego Padres. Overview

The White Sox ended their second-inning rally when ex-Angel Jorge Fabregas, who was traded with Chuck McElroy for Tony Phillips and Chad Kreuter on May 18, hit homered off reliever Darrell May. Fabregas' fifth homer of the season gave Chicago a seemingly unsurmountable 9-0 advantage.

Dickson's career-short outing lasted just 1-2/3 innings, and he allowed a career-high eight earned runs and a season-worst four walks on 53 pitches. His dismal performance also raised eyebrows since his start was pushed back two days because of a tender right elbow.

The never-say-die Angels, however, earned some offensive momentum in the bottom of the second by scoring four runs that cut their deficit to 9-4. Greene accounted for most of the damage with a three-run homer off Chicago starter Jaime Navarro.

Chicago scored two runs in the fourth to take an 11-4 lead. But the Angels brutalized Navarro for three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to tie the game. Navarro allowed an eye-popping 11 runs on 11 hits in only 4-2/3 innings and the Angels tied the game on a Phillips RBI double off reliever Tony Castillo.

The White Sox took a temporary 12-11 lead lead in the eighth on an RBI popout by Cameron that scored Albert Belle. But Edmonds tied the game with a homer to straight center in the eighth, which was his first at home since June 14 against San Francisco.

Thursday also marked the arrival of the league's trade deadline. There was no surprise deal for the Angels as power-hitter Mark McGwire landed as expected in St. Louis.

Seattle did strengthen its bullpen by trading left fielder and ex-JetHawk Jose Cruz Jr. to Toronto for pitchers Mike Timlin and Paul Spoljaric. As for the Angels, they were content with their team after obtaining pitcher Ken Hill on Tuesday for Leyritz.

``It was easy to stick with this group,'' said Angels general manager Bill Bavasi. ``It wasn't a tough decision whether it was Mark McGwire or anyone else.''

While the Angels were quiet, Chicago made much noise. The White Sox sent pitchers Wilson Alvarez, Danny Darwin and Roberto Hernandez to Dodger-rival San Francisco in exchange for six minor leaguers. All three pitchers dealt will be free agents after the season, and designated hitter Harold Baines was also sent to Baltimore on Tuesday for a player to be named later The concept of the "player to be named later" is most often associated with Major League Baseball trades. The "player to be named later" (PTBNL) is generally used to postpone a trade's final conditions or terms. This is often done for two reasons. .
