So goes the thinking behind the annual tomato tasting being held today at Hortus, at 284 E. Orange Grove Blvd. in Pasadena. The Hortus staff will be joined by Pinot restaurants' chefs, who will demonstrate how to prepare cool tomato recipes for summer dining.

Admission to the event is one (or more) correctly identified homegrown tomato.

You and your tomato should check in at 9 a.m. Participants can begin tasting at 9:30 a.m. and vote for their favorite entries. And the Pinot chefs start creating edibles with the tomatoes at 10:30 a.m. Refreshments will include soups, salads and salsa made from the tomatoes.
