USC tailback/fullback Chad Pierson. It looks as though he'll get a lot more playing time today, especially with fullback Charlie Landrigan nursing a sore ankle and tailback Darryl Poston out with a sprained knee.

Arizona update: After a 3-0 start, the Wildcats have lost four in a row, all against Pacific-10 Conference opponents. One reason is the defense, which allows 34 points per game. Physical tailback Clarence Farmer, who averages 98 yards per game, should pose problems for the Trojans. He gained 134 yards last year against USC.

No. 4 UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
 at No. 20 STANFORD

Kickoff: 12:30 p.m., at Stanford Stadium (capacity 85,500).

TV/Radio: Ch. 7; 1150-AM.

Records: UCLA 6-0, 3-0; Stanford 4-1, 3-1.

Series: UCLA leads 38-29-3. The Bruins have won six of the last eight, but five games in that span have been decided by four points or less.

Injuries: UCLA - G Shane Lehmann (ankle) is questionable. WR Brian Poli-Dixon (dislocated shoulder) is doubtful. CB Matt Ware (ankle) is probable. Stanford - QB Randy Fasani (knee), DT Matt Leonard (back) are out. DT Trey Freeman (ankle) is questionable.

Players to watch: Teyo Johnson. Stanford's 6-foot-7 basketball-playing receiver will present matchup problems against 5-9 cornerback Ricky Manning. Johnson leaped over the other all-conference cornerback, Oregon's Rashad Bauman, to grab touchdown and two-point-conversion passes last week. Steven Vieira. UCLA's freshman guard, who struggled in the first half of his first start last week, will be tested by the wide variety of blitzes the Cardinal runs. Chris Lewis. The Stanford quarterback has come off the bench to lead the Cardinal past Texas, USC and Oregon in the last two years. But he's 0-3 as a starter and couldn't rally Stanford past UCLA in a relief appearance last season.

Stanford update: The Cardinal generally doesn't beat itself. It has had the fewest penalties in the Pac-10 the last five seasons and has turned the ball over 12 times in five games, second-fewest in the Pac-10 behind UCLA's 11. With Lewis replacing the injured Fasani at quarterback, the Cardinal lost a running threat, but the sophomore could develop into one of the Pac-10's best quarterbacks.

Time: 7:15 p.m., Fox Sports Net

Matchup: The 31-28 victory over Arizona last week kept the 13th-ranked Huskies among the nation's top 15 for the 18th consecutive game. But it was the fourth time this year that Washington has had to come from behind to win, and it left coach Rick Neuheisel determined to get more production from the running game to keep defenses off quarterback Cody Pickett, who separated his right shoulder Oct. 6 but passed for a school record 455 yards last week.

No. 11 OREGON (6-1, 3-1) at No. 14 WASHINGTON ST. (7-0, 4-0)

CAL (0-6, 0-4) at OREGON ST. (2-4, 1-3)

Time: 1 p.m.

Matchup: The Beavers can become bowl-eligible by winning four of their last five games, and playing the Bears on Saturday in Corvallis, Ore., presents the Beavers a chance to regain some momentum. The Golden Bears, on the other hand, are even more desperate for a victory. Cal hasn't gone winless since the 1897 team went 0-3-2. Five of those games were played against a club called Reliance.
