and Melvin Simmons - Although they actually switched positions for parts of the Hawaii game, their slight change of outside positions was ballyhooed this week. USC defensive end Van Brown - He makes his season debut as the backup to Kenechi Udeze, which means he should see a few snaps, especially with Cal's penchant for passing. USC tailback Whitney Lewis - After a week at his new position, he's supposed to get several carries today. USC wide receiver Steve Smith - Will this be the game the freshman finally gets opportunities as the Trojans' No. 3 receiver? USC wide receiver Justin Wyatt - This probably will be the first close game where he returns punts under pressure.

California update: Six games before the end of September? The Bears have been busy, but it's probably a wise move as they prepared junior-college transfer quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has completed 58.2 percent of his passes. In his first start last week against Illinois, Rodgers completed 20 of 37 passes for 263 yards and one touchdown.
