The nation's third leading cause of death is stroke and, in a recent survey of the Journal of the American Medical Association JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association is an international peer-reviewed general medical journal, published 48 times per year by the American Medical Association. JAMA is the most widely circulated medical journal in the world. , it was found that the people at greatest risk know very little about this disease.

Slightly more than half of 1,800people surveyed could identify at least one symptom of stroke.

In an effort to educate people, the National Stroke Association has come up with the first national expert set of stroke-prevention guidelines. These guidelines will help educate the public about prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.

Recent studies have revealed that stroke risk is doubled every decade after age 55, that the incidence of stroke among African-Americans is nearly double the numbers found among white Americans and that stroke kills more than twice as many women as breast cancer each year.

For free information on the Stroke Prevention Guidelines, you may contact the National Stroke Association at (800) 787-6537.
