TO MOM WITH LOVE; SOUTHLAND CELEBRATION HONORS REAL FIRST LADIES.

Byline: Deborah Sullivan Daily News Staff Writer

They are moral beacons, repositories of history and distributors of smiles and laughter when life is dark, family members said Sunday about their mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers.

About 1,500 people gathered at the Jewish Home for the Aging to honor hundreds of moms in what was billed as the largest Mother's Day celebration in the world.

``We have to respect our moms, our grandmothers, and take care of our families and our children,'' said U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer Barbara Levy Boxer (born November 11, 1940) is an American politician and the current junior U.S. Senator from the State of California.

A member of the Democratic Party, Boxer was first elected to the U.S.
, D-San Francisco, who was honored during the celebration as Celebrity Mom of the Year.

Residents of the home received visits from as many as four generations of their families. They enjoyed music of the Ruben Berci Orchestra over a lunch of salad and bagels, danced with costumed cartoon characters and signed a Mother's Day card 16 feet by 10 feet.

``When she told me (she won) I didn't believe it,'' said Catalina Avalos, 25. ``I'm very proud.''

Each of the winning moms received a four-pound box of See's Candy, a copy of her daughter's essay, family tickets to Disneyland and dinner at Spago. Each winning daughters got a $500 grant for her school.

``She is there for me in times of trouble,'' wrote Rebecca Rothberg, 9, of Brentwood. ``She is waiting to comfort me when I am depressed. Lastly, but definitely not least, my mother is a child at heart.''

Bella McGowan, 45, whose 12-year-old daughter, Sarah Kate, also wrote a winning entry, described their relationship as ``a mutual admiration society Mutual Admiration Society

``I'm so proud of her I wonder if I did the teaching or not,'' Kallick said. ``I think she taught me as she was growing up.''

Many moms celebrated quietly with their broods, who mused over the meaning of motherhood.

``Love them all,'' advised resident Gert Stone, 94, surrounded by her extensive family.

``We never had any fights in our family because my mother wouldn't let us,'' said Stone's daughter, Gloria Borenstein, 72. ``We have disagreements, but if we have something to say we talk about it, and we never hold a grudge grudge

Their family said Stone and Borenstein act as gentle matriarchs, offering guidance and wisdom to several generations of offspring.

``They're very positive and I'd say liberal for their times,'' said Marisa Kamenow, 18, Borenstein's granddaughter and Stone's great-granddaughter. She said she feels free to confide her problems with life and boys to her elder relatives. ``They're pretty wild. They cheer me up by telling me their stories, and they're surprisingly similar.''

To Lisa Sevin, 40, of North Hollywood, her grandmother, Sadye Hirschson, 103, is a living testament to history. Hirschson, who traveled by ship from New York New York, state, United States

``I loved to listen to all her stories. It's fascinating to me that she lived through so much of history - from the invention of the refrigerator to the airplane airplane, aeroplane, or aircraft, heavier-than-air vehicle, mechanically driven and fitted with fixed wings that support it in flight through the dynamic action of the air. .''

Claire Bizar, 90, insisted on giving her two daughters opportunities she felt cheated out of.

``I was determined that they should be professionals, so I sent them to the University of Illinois University of Illinois may refer to:

Throughout Los Angeles, mothers received recognition at a myriad of events.
