TMN SELECTS MOTOROLA INFRASTRUCTURE FOR HIGH-DENSITY GSM COVERAGE IN LISBON AND OPORTO

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Telecomunicacoes Movels Nacionals of Portugal (TMN) has awarded Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group a three year contract to supply cellular system equipment for the next phase of the expansion of its GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network. Motorola will supply cellular systems equipment for network expansion throughout the country including the key cities of Lisbon and Oporto.
In selecting its system supplier, TMN which is Portugal's first GSM operator, has placed a priority on providing high quality portable coverage in the key commercial centers of Lisbon and Oporto. Motorola will supply sectored base stations and innovative frequency reuse techniques to meet these needs. Installation for Lisbon is scheduled to be completed during this summer.
Under earlier contracts, Motorola has already supplied base transceiver stations (BTS), base station controllers (BSC) and an operations and maintenance center (OMC) to launch the TMN service in the Algarve and Alentejo regions.
"The availability of compact GSM portables is the major driving force in the GSM market and we have selected Motorola to enhance the TMN network and ensure that portable users throughout Portugal receive service of the highest possible quality," said Rui Remigio, chief executive of TMN.
"We are delighted to continue our close relationship with TMN and look forward to making a significant contribution to the success of GSM in Portugal over the years ahead," said David Hughes, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's European Cellular Infrastructure Division, CIG.
TMN's shareholders are TLP, the Lisbon and Oporto regional operator, Telecom Portugal, the national operator, and CPRM, the Portuguese telecommunications carrier.
