TMI/UNBOUND, TRW CRACK 2 GB STORAGE BARRIER TO OFFER LARGE DRIVE RAID FOR OS/2 USERS

IRVINE, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- TMI/UNBOUND (NASDAQ: TMKT) today announced the availability of an OS/2 software driver, integrated jointly with TRW Inc. in Oklahoma City, Okla., for use with its RAIDSTOR data storage systems. The new driver allows users to break the two gigabyte disk storage barrier of the OS/2 operating system and add more than 100 gigabytes of RAID storage capacity to their computer systems.
The new driver option lets OS/2 users configure redundant arrays of inexpensive disk (RAID) drives, consisting of as many as 35 SCSI dries that can be viewed by the computer as one large, contiguous drive. The new software driver may be used with TMI/UNBOUND's RAIDSTOR-F5 and RAIDSTOR-T3 data storage systems. The F5 unit uses 5 1/4-inch SCSI drives and provides a maximum capacity of more than 100 GB. The T3 system uses 3 1/4-inch SCSI drives and provides up to 73.5 GB of capacity. Both systems are configurable for either RAID 0 or RAID 5 modes of operation and are useful for either large, file-oriented applications or transactional systems with high volumes of small I/O requests, according to Roger Aouizerat, TMI/UNBOUND president and chief executive officer.
"This OS/2 driver was originally implemented to meet the specific application requirements of a TRW end user customer," Aouizerat said. "It has proven to be so effective that we are now making it available to all OS/2 users who need large capacity RAID systems."
The RAIDSTOR units are intelligent RAID systems that permit the configuration of up to 35 drives in master and slave units. They use a SCSI fast and wide interface to the host OS/2 computer to provide unparalleled data transfer rates. RAID performance is rated at 475 I/Os per second in RAID 0 mode and 425 I/Os per second in RAID 45 mode. These modes may be configured via a PC or terminal connection to the integral 25 MHz Intel 80960-CA superscalar microprocessor. Firmware updates are accomplished easily through the use of floppy disks or modem to update flash memory.
The new OS/2 driver will be included free of charge as an integral part of the company's RAIDSTOR product line, which is sold by OEMs, system integrators and value-added resellers, including TRW.
