TJ INTERNATIONAL SITES NEW MANUFACTURING PLANT

BOISE, Idaho, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- TJ International (NASDAQ: TJCO) announced today that its Trus Joist MacMillan joint venture will build a first-of-a-kind engineered lumber plant in the Buckhannon, W.Va. area.
The new plant will be the world's only facility to manufacture both laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and parallel strand lumber (PSL) under one roof. It will cost approximately $85 million. Construction is expected to begin during the second quarter of 1994, after necessary state and local permits are secured and will take about 15 months to complete. At full production the plant will employ approximately 250 people.
"We are aggressively expanding to meet accelerating demand and lengthen our market leadership," said TJ International president and chief executive officer Walt Minnick. "This plant, along with our other new facilities, will substantially expand our capacity and leverage the competitive advantages of our proprietary engineered lumber technologies."
He continued, "By combining two engineered lumber technologies, the plant will convert more of each log into high-value engineered lumber products. This uses a valuable forest resource more efficiently."
This is the second major new facilities announcement over the past year for the specialty building materials company. Last fall, the company began construction of a new $100 million TimberStrand(TM) laminated strand lumber (LSL) plant near Hazard, Ky. The West Virginia and Kentucky plants are both sited in the Appalachian mountains amidst abundant yellow poplar forests. Yellow poplar provides a dependable raw material base that costs less than the Douglas fir or southern pine traditionally used for structural lumber products.
TJ International is headquartered in Boise. It serves as managing partner and majority owner of Trus Joist MacMillan, the world's leading manufacturer and marketer of engineered lumber. TJ International's window operations include U.S. subsidiary Norco Windows and Canadian subsidiaries Dashwood Industries and Laflamme & Frere. Annualized sales are in excess of $500 million.
