Between boys' and girls' basketball and boys' and girls' soccer, three Foothill League titles are up for grabs during this final week of the season.

In boys' basketball, first-place Hart (20-4, 7-1) can go from winning the league outright to finishing third depending on how the Indians INDIANS. The aborigines of this country are so called.

In basketball, the top three teams in every league (except four-team leagues) are guaranteed Southern Section playoff berths. Based on school enrollment, Hart, Saugus and Canyon are in Division I-A (second-largest) this year and Valencia is in I-AA, which is the largest, and others with at least 11 victories can petition for at-large berths. But league championships are important because titlists usually are guaranteed a home game in the opening round of the postseason.

For Hart, the prospect of losing two in a row to finish third - which probably would mean playing at a top-four seed in the first round of the playoffs - isn't something Hart coach Tom Kelly People named Tom Kelly include:
  • Tom Kelly (baseball) (born 1950), former manager of the American baseball team the Minnesota Twins.
  • Tom Kelly (basketball) (born 1924), played in 27 games for the Boston Celtics in the 1948-49 NBA season.
 wants to consider.

``We don't think that far in advance,'' he said.

The Hart-Valencia game tonight should be close. Hart defeated Valencia 67-61 on Jan. 21 but nearly blew a 21-point lead.

``It's going to be a loud, emotional game (tonight), and it's probably going to come down to the little things - blocking out, recovering loose balls, turnovers,'' Kelly said. ``I'm not really looking at Valencia as having home-court advantage this time because half the gym will be filled with Hart fans.''

Since the loss to Hart, Valencia has won five in a row, all by at least 12 points, including a 101-58 victory over Burbank on Friday.

``I want our team to play hard and eliminate the mistakes we made last time,'' Valencia coach Rocket Collins said. ``I hope we have home-court advantage this time.''

The Hart girls' team (18-5, 8-0) also has a shot to win the Foothill League title by winning its final two games against visiting Burroughs of Burbank (13-12, 2-6) tonight, and at second-place Saugus (20-5, 7-1) Thursday.

Should Saugus defeat Burroughs tonight, Thursday's matchup would decide the league title. If Saugus wins tonight and Thursday against Hart, then Saugus and Hart will have split their two games, and the league's top team will be decided by coin flip.

But defeating Hart won't be easy, considering the Indians beat Saugus by 21 points when the teams met Jan. 24, a victory that knocked Saugus from atop the Daily News rankings.

Hart, led by guards Ashlee Trebilcock and Amanda Patton, has won 10 in a row since a last-second nonleague loss at Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Canyon (17-0, 8-0) has clinched the league title and closes out the regular season against visiting Hart (7-5-8, 3-4-1) today and Burroughs (6-8-2, 3-5) on Thursday.

In boys' soccer, Canyon (13-2-1, 6-1-1) has one league loss and Hart (12-3-7, 4-2-2), Burroughs (11-7-3, 4-2-2) and Saugus (4-7-7, 2-2-4) each have two, so there's plenty of opportunity for movement with two games remaining for all.
