Description There are two kinds of lung cancers, primary and secondary. . The study may enroll up to approximately 200 patients and will be performed in two stages. In the first stage, 36 patients will be enrolled. If a sufficient number of clinical responses are seen, as defined in the study protocol, an additional 160 patients will be enrolled in the second stage of the study. Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer related mortality in both men and women in the United States. An estimated 171,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 1998. Approximately 80 percent of the cases will be non-small cell lung cancer, and over 70 percent of patients will have advanced disease at the time of diagnosis. Pivanex(tm) has demonstrated significant anti-cancer activity in numerous laboratory and animal models, and Phase I clinical testing to date has demonstrated lack of serious dose limiting side effects often seen with conventional chemotherapy.
