were running out of gas, but they had just enough fuel left to turn a loss into a tie.

Matt Cullen's tap-in with 2:26 left in regulation gave the Ducks a come-from-behind 2-2 tie against the New York Islanders The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team based in Uniondale, a hamlet located on Long Island in Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, United States.  on Saturday night.

``It was a big point,'' said Anaheim goalie Dominic Roussel Dominic Roussel (born February 22, 1970 in Hull, Quebec) is a retired professional ice hockey goaltender. Playing career

, who stopped 31 shots in making his first start in 12 games. ``Right now, every point is big for us.''

The first period was one of the best for the Islanders all season. They outshot the Mighty Ducks 12-3 and took a 2-0 lead.

Trevor Linden Trevor Linden, OBC, (born April 11, 1970 in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. Linden turned around and flipped a shot into the top right corner. New York New York, state, United States

After the first period, everything changed.

``(Coach) Craig (Hartsburg) came in and read us the riot act,'' Ducks captain Paul Kariya said. ``We just didn't come out ready to play.''

The Islanders had several chances early in the second period to add to their lead, but either shots went wide or right to Roussel. About halfway through the period, Anaheim started to gain momentum and began testing Islanders goalie Wade Flaherty, who made his eighth straight start since the March 20 trade of Tommy Salo.

The Ducks got on the board at 14:00 on a power-play goal by Fredrik Olausson. He sneaked in from the right point and banged Teemu Selanne's cross-ice pass past Flaherty.

``We started skating in the second half (of the period) and supported each other,'' Kariya said. ``That was the difference - we played better when we were skating.''

Both teams had chances in the third period, but Cullen finally capitalized on a play that wasn't supposed to go to him. Kariya had the puck along the right boards and was trying to center to Selanne, who came from behind the net. The puck hit the skate of New York defenseman Zdeno Chara and bounced right to Cullen, who had a yawning net in front of him.

``We're supposed to be professionals and be ready for each game,'' Kariya said. ``I think part of the problem tonight was since we clinched a playoff spot, there was a natural tendency to let down.''

``We played against a highly skilled team and played very well,'' Islanders coach Bill Stewart said. ``I think we're learning how to play with the better teams in this league. The story tonight was in the second period when we didn't bury our chances. You're a creature of habit Creature of Habit may refer to:
