TIPOFF : MAYOR'S RACE TAKES TO THE BICYCLE PATH.

Byline: RICK ORLOV

ASSEMBLY Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  makes no secret about how he would like to fill Mayor Richard Riordan's shoes.

But the immediate question is whether he's fit enough to keep pace with the mayor today.

Villaraigosa, with a bike and helmet borrowed from the mayor, will attempt to keep up with Riordan during the 26.2-mile bicycle race preceding today's L.A. Marathon.

Despite the nearly 20-year difference in their ages, Villaraigosa is making no pretense of keeping up with the bicycle fanatic Riordan, who each summer takes off for cross-country rides.

``The speaker rides a bike some, but nothing like the mayor,'' one aide said. ``We expect them to start off together and then meet after the ride.''

Among those looking hard at the race are three council members - Laura Chick, Ruth Galanter Ruth Galanter was a city councilwoman from Los Angeles. Tuttle is looking at a run for Galanter's council seat as term limits set in motion a vast game of political musical chairs - an unintended consequence that may be term limits' hallmark.

, there is still an election this year, and Councilman Nate Holden is feeling the heat.

Holden is in a tight race with pastor and community activist Madison Shockley and Scott Suh, a Korean-American.

Shockly and Suh have been drawing wide support against the maverick incumbent, who has been involved in a series of controversies over the years.

Holden became particularly incensed recently when he was invited and then disinvited to a dinner by the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles.

The dinner was for acting Chairman Se Hyung Cho of the Republic of Korea.

Holden complained he had given money and support to the federation over the years and was dismayed at its action.

``It disappoints me that this well-known organization has chosen to display such a lack of professional leadership,'' Holden said.

Holden is not giving up the fight for support in the Korean-American community.

Last week, he joined with police in appealing for information leading to the arrest of murder suspects in the death of a Korean businessman.
