TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.

Byline: Joel Stratte-McClure

It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it

With the awards season raging, celebs have so many choices to make (which party to go to -- maybe all, which swag to pick up -- probably all) and ordeals to go through (Joan Rivers Joan Rivers (born June 8, 1933) is an American comedian, actress, talk show host, businesswoman, and celebrity. She is known for her brash manner and loud, raspy voice with a heavy metropolitan New York accent.  asking, ``Who are you wearing?'' while mispronouncing your name and forgetting who you are and smiling at the paparazzi's cameras while thinking of ways of torturing them that ``24'' wouldn't even show).

So here's a glimpse of the three-day slough some of Hollywood's elite recently, uh, endured.

FEELING LIKE A SARDINE sardine: see herring.

HBO's annual pre-Golden Globes private reception was so crowded, it was actually difficult to breathe while staggering through the hotel's lobby, dining room and outdoor terrace. ``You're going the wrong way if you're looking for Looking for

The packed-like-sardines venue was definitely a hot party on a cold night.

``There are 350 cars parked in the valet!'' exclaimed Dani Janssen, widow of David Janssen, moaning about how long she would have to stand in the cold to get her car.

True partiers got creative. Mary-Kate Olsen tried to dance to ``Bette Davis Eyes'' while holding an energy drink, Chris Klein Chris Klein may refer to:

and Ginnifer Goodwin had big love on their minds while sitting on a sofa, and Chris Rock worked his BlackBerry. Robin Weigert was complimented about her upcoming appearance on ``Lost,'' and the mayor stressed the importance of getting four hours of sleep and exercising two hours a day. ``Otherwise, things like this would give me a heart attack,'' said Villaraigosa.

``Far be it from me to complain about being in this crowd,'' said actor Adam Beach. ``I love watching these people deal with all of the hype and attention.''

football stars can only take so much.

``I can't handle anymore,'' said Cuba Gooding Jr. as he left at the unfashionably early hour of 10:30. ``That's enough for me.'' Hey, the partying's just started. Buck up.

WHAT, NO BANGERS?: On Sunday, American nominees like Whitaker, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep tried to attract votes from members of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

The first step for some was to attend the BAFTA/LA British Awards Season Tea Party on Sunday and politely indulge in fish, chips, savories and puddings prepared by British chef Ashley James at the Four Seasons Hotel.

After all, 1,200 of BAFTA's 6,500 members are in L.A., and it pays to woo voters for the U.K.'s equivalent of the Oscars being held in London on Feb. 11.

``We ply them with liquor and let them woo away,'' said Peter Morris, the chairman of BAFTA/LA. ``To impress voters, they should simply relax and be as self-deprecating as possible.''

Whitaker and nominees of various nationalities -- among them Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz, Toni Collette, Stephen Frears, Paul Greengrass, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Guillermo del Toro Toro may refer to:
  • Denominación de Origen Toro, the Spanish wine region
  • Toró, the nickname of Rafael Ferreira Francisco, Brazilian football (soccer) player
, Emily Blunt and Peter Morgan -- diplomatically worked the room. ``Babel'' director Gonzalez Inarritu was especially popular with women of a certain age, while men of all ages flocked to chat with Blunt, Cruz and Winslet.

Putting on airs wasn't part of the show. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

,'' said Winslet, ``but I think it's a mistake to act in a different way than I do anywhere else just to get votes.''

And being American might even be a plus.

``The love of American cinema is so profound and deeply rooted in Britain that we are consumed by a sense of personal and collective inadequacy,'' said screenwriter Morgan, who's nominated for both ``The Last King of Scotland'' and ``The Queen.''

``It's the British actors here today who have to endear en·dear

themselves to the voters,'' he said.

PICKING UP SWAG CAN BE TAXING: ``You mean I don't even have to call the phone company?'' Courteney Cox said when she picked up a free BlackBerry Pearl during a break from Golden Globe Awards rehearsals on Sunday. Then she moved to the next stand at the Backstage Creations Retreat at the Beverly Hilton and listened to a spiel spiel   Informal

[Italian dialectal, from Latin Bore
Bora's a no-brainer!'' Cox told hubby David Arquette. ``We're definitely going!''

Jennifer Hudson, Jeremy Irons, Jessica Biel, Ken Davitian, Tina Fey, Adrian Grenier, Hayden Panettiere, Kevin Dillon and Djimon Hounsou also picked up free BlackBerrys. And almost everyone took a copy of ``Stars Aboard'' when they stopped to discuss a Cunard cruise.

``I'm a short, fat and bald guy living the good life after an overnight success that took 30 years,'' said ``Borat'' co-star Davitian during his first visit to a gift lounge. Then he signed a Starbucks T-shirt that will be auctioned to benefit the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation.

But the celebrities, charity and swag weren't the most important attractions at the lounge. That was the CPA (Computer Press Association, Landing, NJ) An earlier membership organization founded in 1983 that promoted excellence in computer journalism. Its annual awards honored outstanding examples in print, broadcast and electronic media. The CPA disbanded in 2000.  on hand to explain the tax implications involved with gifts valued at over $600.

``There's so much confusion and media hype about the tax implications of accepting gifts, we brought a specialist in to talk to the stars,'' explained Backstage Creations founder Karen Wood.

``Celebrities, just like the rest of us, have to pay taxes, and we want everyone to feel comfortable.''

``I'm comfortable, I'm comfortable,'' said Davitian. ``Imagine Borat in Bora Bora. It can't be that taxing.''

are eagerly waiting to see whether they'll get Oscar nominations next Tuesday. It's a decent bet that Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker, who have both tirelessly appeared at dozens of events to promote their award-winning films and best-acting nominations, will both get nods. Then they'll have to avoid the dreaded Awards Show Fatigue Syndrome fatigue syndrome Chronic fatigue syndrome, see there. Cf Burnout. .

``The whole key to survival is to not expect anything and calmly bask in the attention while it lasts,'' Mirren said after she won Golden Globes for her roles in both ``The Queen'' and ``Elizabeth I.'' ``My reality check is not `Will I now win the big O(scar)?' but, `What's my next job going to be?'''

Whitaker, who's already picked up a dozen awards for his portrayal of Idi Amin in ``The Last King of Scotland,'' hopes that work, travel and fewer appearances will prevent him from contracting ASFS ASFS Acoustic Sensor Functional Segment

before the 79th Academy Awards on Feb. 25.

``There's been an event every day this year, and it's an honor to promote the film and receive all these awards,'' Whitaker said at a Globes after party on Monday night. ``But I'm going to direct a commercial and then help market `King' abroad for two weeks to keep from burning out in L.A.''

Another campaigner keeps it simple.

``I stick close to my beautiful wife, read good novels, spend time with my best friends and avoid expectations,'' said ``Babel'' director Alejandro Gonzzlez Inarritu.

How long does ASFS last?

``It took me until Christmas to recover from awards season,'' said Felicity Huffman, the Golden Globes best actress winner for ``Transamerica'' last year.

``It's definitely fatiguing and hard work.''

If you can get it!
