TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.

Byline: Elizabeth Snead

UNDERSTATED DIAMONDS: Even with bombs falling on Baghdad, some in Hollywood still plan to party. Just not as hearty.

But in the light of the announcement of the rolled-up red carpet for Sunday's Oscar ceremony, many party planners are following suit, eliminating red carpets and press from this week's Oscar-oriented bashes. Wednesday night's ``Dazzling With Color and Dripping With Diamonds'' party, sponsored by Women's Wear Daily Women's Wear Daily (WWD) is a fashion-industry trade journal sometimes called "the bible of fashion."[1][2] It is the flagship journal of Fairchild Publications, Inc.[3] WWD's publisher is Ralph Erardy, Sr.  and held at a private estate in Los Feliz, had no press-lined red carpet - despite stars such as Iman, Angela Bassett and Daryl Hannah in basic black and a fab performance from the girl group Pretty Babies.

Lots of fashion publicists and stylists checked all the colored diamonds on display and looked a little downtrodden down·trod·den

But Phillip Bloch, who dresses Halle Berry, says not all the stars will dress down. ``Will J.Lo wear a simple black pantsuit? I don't think so!''

Nicky Hilton allowed that she always has a great time during Oscar party week but that this week was the first time she actually had to work. Her new evening handbag line had a launch party at Le Meridan Hotel Tuesday night.

Also Wednesday night, the stars made it to the premiere of director Lawrence Kasdan's scary rendition of Stephen King's book ``Dreamcatcher'' at Westwood's Mann Theatre. All the film's stars were part of the fear factor, including Morgan Freeman, Jason Lee, Thomas Jane and Damian Lewis.

Will the freshly shaved, dapper actor sport a beard to look more menacing for his role? ``I'm thinking of pulling out a George Michael 4 o'clock shadow.'' (Now that's scary!)

Jane modeled a reddish-brown suit but rushed by the red carpet. Fortunately, his fiancee, Patricia Arquette, was a little more forthcoming. Wearing a matching pinstriped jacket with pants, the actress was more excited about her newborn daughter with Jane than to talk about what she was wearing. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Donnie Wahlberg proved a very protective parent as he stood close to his son Xavier, making sure the boy was all buttoned up for the chilly night. ``He's the perfect person to watch this film.''

And what was the first film that made horror meister Stephen King shiver in his shoes? ``Bambi.''
