HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FRED: Memorial Day marked a remembrance of a different kind in Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities.  on Monday night. Following a day of honoring veterans, the evening was all about recalling the life and influence of Fred Hayman, aka "the Father of Beverly Hills."

Hayman, who also celebrated his 82nd birthday that night, was the genius behind the Giorgio Beverly Hills boutique and fragrance, the place that started it all, with its famous yellow-and-white-wrapped packages that, as emcee George Schlatter joked, "kept more Beverly Hills marriages together than anything else" and became the dream gift of every Hollywood wife.

Still not quite sure who he is? Let Merv Griffin Mervyn Edward "Merv" Griffin, Jr. (July 6 1925 – August 12 2007) was an American talk show host, game show host, entertainer, pianist, television personality and raconteur.  explain.

"You cannot stop the man. He knew what he wanted to do in Beverly Hills, and of course that is Rodeo Drive Rodeo Drive (IPA: /roʊˈdeɪoʊ/) generally refers to a famous three-block long stretch of boutiques and shops in Beverly Hills, California, United States, although the street stretches further north and south. . He was fashion coordinator of the Academy Awards for 11 years and, first with Giorgio and later with Fred Hayman Beverly Hills, for decades set the style standard for everyone who was anyone.

No wonder so much of Old Hollywood turned out for the "Tribute to Fred Hayman," an ultra-fancy dinner party held in the street, which closed off Dayton Way at Rodeo Drive. Sculptor Robert Graham presented the diminutive dynamo with a commemorative sculpture, the Beverly Hills city council named a nearby throughway Fred Hayman Place, and Placido Domingo turned up, too, just in time to sing "Happy Birthday" to the man who, starting back in the '60s, made Rodeo Drive what it is today, a mecca of shopping for the rich and famous.

At night's end, all agreed that this was definitely a memorable night on Memorial Day.

A BIRTHDAY TOAST: Choreographer Brian Friedman's pal Britney Spears didn't make it to his birthday party/clothing launch event at Les Deux in Hollywood on Tuesday night; too bad, since she may be one of the only people who would willingly pay $300 for a bottle of $12 Jose Cuervo tequila, the going rate for bottle service (a banquette ban·quette

Actually, Friedman's pal Jason Davis, who showed up sporting electric blond hair and shades for the late-night event, could afford it, too. That party boy is the grandson of oil billionaire Marvin Davis and son of socialite Nancy Davis. And longtime actress/dancer/choreographer Debbie Allen could surely pay that steep price as well, but she was more interested in checking out Friedman's new line of hip-hop shoes and dance apparel from Frontline/Capezio, which was part of the point of the party.

The rest of the wildly dressed dance-style-influenced crowd seemed content to pick up their drinks at the open bar, as most of them are still trying to make that big Hollywood score. Reality-show stalwarts Jai Rodriguez ("Queer Eye for the Straight Guy") made the scene early, while "Making the Band" stars Aundra Fimbres and Shannon Bex vamped on the red carpet later on.

Singer-dancers Shanice Wilson and Sandra Colton joined the patio crush, too, where Friedman and friends toasted his 30th year and his new venture.

"This is a fantastic way to celebrate my birthday," he said, grinning.
