TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.

PHOENIX RISING: Charity for the good of our children is always a big draw for L.A.'s rich and famous, which made Wednesday night a double winner for America's kids.

This article is about the comedian. For the sitcom starring the comedian, see George Lopez (TV series).

"I was a mean drunk," he told the rapt audience filled with teens helped by the program. "I don't remember, but I believe them -- that's what they told me.

"I realize (after my illness) that I 'got' life for the first time and didn't want to take anything away from this gift of life by my own hand."

Joining Lopez in encouraging the kids to stay straight were Mario Lopez, along with his "Dancing With the Stars Dancing with the Stars is the name for a number of international television series based on the format of the British series Strictly Come Dancing.  Barbra Streisand joined Blythe Danner, Molly Sims, Dana Delany, Emily Deschanel and Debi Mazar at the Los Angeles Antique Show opening-night party.

That bash launched the four-day show and benefited P.S. Arts, the organization dedicated to bringing the arts back to public schools in disadvantaged areas, and drew more than 2,500 people.

Seems that when it comes to helping kids -- oh, and also getting to be the first to shop for high-end antiques -- everyone in Hollywood is willing to lend a hand to give assistance.

CLEAN AND CLEAR: The first clue that the Prism Awards were not your typical, run-of-the-mill awards show was the fact that there was no wine served with dinner in the crowded Beverly Hills Hotel The Beverly Hills Hotel is a hotel in Beverly Hills, CA, at 9641 Sunset Boulevard. It was opened on May 12, 1912 and started by Margaret J. Anderson and her son, Stanley S. Anderson, who had been managing the Hollywood Hotel.  ballroom. Water was it, so no one got drunk and did something foolish, in keeping with the sober and mentally alert message celebrated by the Entertainment Industries Council on Tuesday night.

Melissa Rivers hosted the 11th annual awards, created to celebrate the accurate depiction of addiction (alcohol, drugs, tobacco) and mental-health issues in the media. In her typically red-carpet way, she paid as much attention to winner Allison Janney's Cole Haan coat as to her performance as an alcoholic's wife in the film "Our Very Own," shouting out "Who made your coat?" as Janney accepted her glass statuette.

The clear-headed crowd kept things mostly serious all night as some of Hollywood's favorite people bestowed and accepted an assortment of awards.

"Heroes" hotties Jack Coleman, Greg Grunberg and Santiago Cabrera joined Judith Light and Michael Urie from "Ugly Betty," Henry Simmons from "Shark," and all-grown-up Andrea Bowen from "Desperate Housewives" on the podium, while winner Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: SVU SVU Special Victims Unit

SVU Sri Venkateswara University (Tirupati, India)

") accepted via video.

But sometimes you've just gotta laugh at substance abuse, as "Family Guy" winner Greg Colton joshed, "If I can stop one cartoon character from getting high, I've done my job," and Pam Cook, the winning director of "American Dad," reminded everyone "not to purge this delicious meal!"

FINE CHINA: Trekking up to the Brentwood hills for a bit of pampering on Wednesday night was a no-brainer for a gaggle of fabulous women. After all, the private fete at the home of famed Harvard-trained skin specialist Dr. Jessica Wu combined a great cause -- raising money for the charity Half the Sky -- with a chance to primp primp

The "Celebration of Beauty" drew Golden Globe nominee Maria Bello, both for the cause and the host.

"I met Jessica Wu three years ago, and she told me about Half the Sky," Bello shouted above the din of chattering females scattered throughout Wu's ultramodern manse. The charity provides funds to orphanages in China, aiding orphaned Chinese girls and providing caring nannies for babies, early childhood education and enrichment programs for older females who have not been adopted.

"I spent three months in China," Bello continued, "and I met a lot of little girls there who are orphans. Half the Sky provides for their education and their health. I just think it is such a beautiful concept, this idea of women's empowerment, especially in China."

Feeling powerful for females in Hollywood is often all tied up with looking fabulous, which is what the night was really all about. Hair wizard Steve Lococo of Borelli Salons whipped up new 'dos for the gals, while brow queen Anastasia and her daughter zapped those stray eyebrow hairs and makeup artist Jennifer Sullivan revealed her secrets of shading and color.

Actresses Amber Tamblyn and Ashley Johnson ("Fast Food Nation") joined author Patti Davis and HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)
