TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.

Byline: Jenny Peters

SO HOT ... AND SO NOT: Smashbox Studios in Culver City was the place to be all week if you are a fashionista. The Mercedes-Benz Fall Fashion Week kicked off there a week ago with both a bang and a whimper.

Sue Wong led the way with an inspired group of mod '60s-influenced dresses, from hot-hued, spangly span·gle

Alvin Valley, whose line featured his signature menswear slacks with looks reminiscent of Katharine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich, drew a horde of heiresses on Tuesday, both on the runway (Lydia Hearst) and in the audience.

Kevan Hall closed out the week, making the rest of the designers look like rank amateurs. His impeccable tailoring of wool suits, slacks, and gorgeous gowns in jewel tones and jet black had the audience (including Garcelle Beauvais, Sofia Milos and Tischa Campbell) cheering.

So what are the best trends for fall, according to L.A. Fashion Week? Brights, geometrics ge·o·met·rics
