TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.

Byline: Joel Stratte-McClure

FALLING TO PIECES: Everything was running smoothly for triple Oscar nominee George Clooney George Timothy Clooney (May 6, 1961) is an American actor, director, producer and screenwriter who gained fame as the lead doctor in the long-running television drama, ER  at the 21st Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  International Film Festival last weekend.

Leonard Maltin paid him compliment after compliment during a two-hour chat in front of a packed crowd at the Arlington Theatre. Fans applauded clips that ranged from ``ER'' to ``Good Night, and Good Luck.'' And Clooney joked about some of his career bloopers.

``It's funny to watch yourself age on screen like this,'' Clooney said. ``Sometimes I'm proud; sometimes I'm really embarrassed. My career took off overnight with 'ER' and now I'm trying to make up for 'Batman & Robin.' ''

But Clooney's true nature was revealed when Grant Heslov, his friend of 25 years and the Oscar-nominated co-screenwriter of ``Good Night,'' presented him with the Modern Master Award, the festival's top accolade.

``Working with the guy is no picnic because it's always about him,'' deadpanned Heslov. ``When we're writing, we've got to work at his house, which is in Italy. You've got to swim in his pool, ski behind his boat, ride his motorcycles and eat the food that his chef prepares. It's not easy. And the workload is brutal. Sometimes we write two or three pages a day.''

Heslov then gave the trophy to Clooney, who launched into a sincere thank-you speech. But when he held the prize above his head, it broke into two pieces, fell to the floor and got the best laugh of the night.

``Did you do this to (2004 winner) Peter Jackson, too?'' a slightly embarrassed Clooney asked the hysterical crowd.

That gaffe may explain why Clooney skipped the after-party held in a Spartan underground garage and instead retreated to the bar at Louie's Restaurant in the Upman Hotel to swap stories with Heslov and pals. ``Did I tell you about the time I got the Modern Master trophy in Santa Barbara ....''

There was also a special screening of ``Neil Young: Heart of Gold'' the concert film directed by Jonathan Demme, at the Paramount Studios Lot on Tuesday night. (The film is reviewed on Page 14.) Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh, Rick Rosas, Ben Harper and Jodie Foster were nearby when singer/songwriter Young discussed the latest variety of music in his repertoire.

``I wrote 'Here for You' for my daughter Amber when she left home for college,'' said Young, referring to a song performed in the film from his Grammy-nominated ``Prairie Wind'' album. ``I used to write this kind of song for girls my own age, but now it embodies my new empty- nester nest·er

Could it actually inspire more such hits by other aging musicians?

``I hear the Stones are going to change the title of one old hit to 'Let's Take a Nap Together,' '' said Demme, who shot ``Heart of Gold'' in Nashville's Ryman Auditorium last summer. ``But Neil's our Shakespeare, and his song sums up empty-nesting so completely that it doesn't leave a lot of room for anyone else.''
