COMEDY MENTORS: Make no mistake about it - two hours of comedy from Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres Ellen Lee DeGeneres (born January 26, 1958) is an American stand-up comedian, actress, and currently the Emmy Award-winning host of the syndicated talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

After a buffet dinner Wednesday night at Hollywood & Highland, guests including Debi Mazar, ``Desperate Housewives'' gardener Jesse Metcalf, Betty Thomas, Lea Thompson and Linda Foster filled the Kodak Theatre for the Stand Up for Mentoring fundraiser and a comedy show that deserves to be aired on HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)

And maybe it will be. The comics turned out to honor their friend, Chris Albrecht, HBO's chairman/chief executive, for his tireless involvement with the Mentor/Los Angeles Mentoring Partnership (www.lamentoring.org).

Eight years ago Albrecht inspired the Work Site Mentoring program that lets HBO and other organizations reach out to underprivileged kids from gang-infested neighborhoods with one-on-one mentoring and group support programs.

But while the topic was serious, the humor was off-the-wall. Host Bob Costas noted how few role models/mentors are left in sports.

``Rafael Palmeiro spoke before Congress and flatly denied using steroids,'' he said. ``But he's he national spokesman for Viagra! All I know is that for the last two years, this guy has been getting good wood on everything.''

Williams mused, ``A German pope. Its a Jew's dream.''

DeGeneres said she had to wing her performance because she misread mis·read

Maher dug up his old rant on President Bush reading to kids during the 9-11 attacks and admitted he was mentoring a 17-year-old Vietnamese girl who lives in his hot tub. ``She calls me Daddy.''

But real-life mentor Patricia Heaton spoke about her friend of 20 years, Vanessa, who moved from New York New York, state, United States

Introducing her old boss for his comedy drill, Heaton explained, ``Because of Ray, I had the best job on the best show ever, and because of Ray I'm now unemployed. But he ended the show at its peak because he has integrity. He's an idiot.''

PARTY 'CRASH'-ERS: Why wasn't there the usual mad stampede for food at the ``Crash'' premiere after-party? Probably because everyone was a bit shaken by the cultural/racial clashes they'd just watched at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences screening in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.

``This film opens people's eyes to the very real tensions between racial groups in L.A. and America,'' said Chris ``Ludacris'' Bridges, who plays a carjacker. ``It makes everyone feel a bit scared and uncomfortable.''

Brendan Fraser, who plays a D.A., noted, ``Everyone who sees 'Crash' becomes more aware, tolerant and polite.'' Reese Witherspoon stuck close to hunky hun·ky 1

Surveying the party's polite mood, writer/director Paul Haggis contends ``Crash'' will ``make people in L.A. want to get closer together.'' Yeah. Maybe in the popcorn line.

ANSWERING THE CALL: Why would Teen Line, Cedars-Sinai's teen counseling service, give a humanitarian award to Megan Mullally, who plays the hilarious, boozy, oversexed o·ver·sexed

Couldn't the hotline that handles 10,000 calls a year from teens troubled by alcohol, drug and sexual abuse find a more sober candidate? ``Yeah, Karen Walker's not quite the perfect role model for kids,'' agreed Mullally at the 25th anniversary lunch for Teen Line at the Beverly Hills Hotel The Beverly Hills Hotel is a hotel in Beverly Hills, CA, at 9641 Sunset Boulevard. Growing up is even hard for famous teens today.

``There's so much pressure, so many stimulants, so much temptation out there today,'' said the ceremony's host, Raven-Symone, 19, from the hit TV show ``That's So Raven That's So Raven is an American Emmy Award-nominated[1] sitcom television series broadcast on the Disney Channel. The plot revolves around teenager Raven Baxter and her schemes to get herself, her friends, Eddie and Chelsea, and family members such as her brother .'' ``Teen Line gives kids a chance to talk to peers who understand exactly what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Released on May 21, 1971 (see 1971 in music), What's Going On reflected the beginning of a new trend in soul music. .''

Mullally admits she wouldn't want to be a teen again. ``Fifty percent of teens today consider suicide. The challenges they face now are so vast. And the people who really should get this award are the teens manning the phones at (800) TLC-TEEN.''
