TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.Byline: Jenny Peters and Elizabeth Snead EASY RIDER: Despite Monday night's downpour, faithful Viggo Mortensen fans lined Hollywood Boulevard For uses other than the original street, see Hollywood Boulevard (disambiguation). Seems Viggo, who has ridden since he was a boy, actually kept one of the horses used in the film. ``I thought about it all during the shoot,'' Mortensen says. ``Then at the end, I asked the owner what he thought about it and he said yes. He stays at a friend's ranch outside of town and I go out there to ride him a lot.'' This isn't his first equine acquisition. He also bought a few ``LOTR'' horses and will soon bring them home. All may end up in the ranch he plans on his land in Idaho. Mortensen, aka the noble Aragorn in the Oscar-sweeping ``LOTR'' trilogy, plays yet another sexy swashbuckler in ``Hidalgo,'' based on the true story of a Pony Express pony express, in U.S. history, relay mail service. At its inception in Apr., 1860, the pony express operated between St. Joseph, Mo., the western end of a telegraph line, and Sacramento, Calif. courier who traveled to Saudi Arabia with his beloved horse Hidalgo. No surprise that director Joe Johnston (new ``Jurassic Park IV'') also directed ``Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Spring Break Adventure'' and the ``Indiana Jones Chronicles'' TV series. ``Hidalgo'' also stars Omar Sharif, best-known for ``Dr. Zhivago,'' who's continuing a movie comeback with ``Cyber Meltdown'' and ``Return of the Thief of Baghdad.'' Proof of how far he's been from Hollywood for the past 20 years. One reason Mortensen took on the project? Nope, not big bucks. Now that's what we call horse sense. INDIE JONES: Spirits were high on Saturday afternoon at the jam-packed Independent Spirit Awards after-party in Santa Monica at Shutters on the Beach. Room after room teemed with revelers, many of whom were lugging the spoils of attending the actual awards, a big black bag emblazoned with the IFC (Internet Foundation Classes) A class library from Netscape that provides an application framework and graphical user interface (GUI) routines for Java programmers. The real winners at the celebration were grasping their Spirit Awards and discussing the future of independent films. In this age of big studios releasing small movies through their spin-off art house divisions, can independent filmmakers stay independent once they have made it to the top of the heap? The big winner of the afternoon, Sofia Coppola for ``Lost in Translation,'' didn't make the party scene, but Clark Peterson, one of the producers of ``Monster,'' winner of Best First Feature, summed up the crowd's attitude, saying, ``I think I'd like to do a little bit of both, some studio films, some independents, but I will forever want to make independent movies, because it is fun to make movies without a studio, to just get out there with a filmmaker and make it.'' Nikki Reed, the 16-year-old writer-actor phenom of ``Thirteen,'' won for Best Debut Performance and insisted that independent flicks are the only way to tell interesting stories. ``(Director) Catherine (Hardwicke) and I are working on something called 'Lords of Dogtown,' which we'll probably do much the same way we did 'Thirteen,' as an independent. But I think doors will open quicker for us this time because of the success of 'Thirteen.' '' Other indie fans who joined the after-party scrum included sibling actors Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Laura Dern, Jennifer Tilly, Toni Collette, Annette O'Toole and hubby Michael McKean and the show's irreverent host, director John Waters. Jon Favreau, who has gone from indie filmmaker (``Swingers'') to big-time studio director (``Elf''), weighed in on the side of independent films, saying, ``Indies are getting bigger than the studio movies. You do independents because there's no other way to make those movies, movies like 'Made.' Whenever I have an idea that is too small to do at a studio, I'll do it independently.''
