: The drumbeats for the new cable channel Spike TV, billed as the first network for men, pounded loudly Tuesday night at that infamous bastion of male fantasy, Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. .

The mansion's lush, sprawling back yard was the perfect party spot to kick off the new network, which, under MTV's umbrella, will hit 86 million homes starting Monday. The grounds were decorated like a sprawling bachelor pad A bachelor pad essentially means a house (pad) in which a bachelor or bachelors (single men) live. It should not be confused with a bachelor apartment, which is a zero bedroom apartment where the main room serves as a bedroom, living room and dining room (and sometimes  with modular black and red leather couches and chairs, heat lamps, cocktail tables, several buffet tables serving salads and tender seafood delicacies.

On Thursday, a judge granted a petition filed by director Spike Lee that ordered the cable channel to stop using the name pending a trial on the issue.

COP SHOP: Life is good, especially when two of the hottest leading men in Hollywood are within two feet of you within minutes of each other. Such was the case in Westwood Tueday night, as Josh Hartnett and Harrison Ford stepped out for the premiere of their cop caper caper, common name for members of the Capparidaceae, a family of tropical plants found chiefly in the Old World and closely related to the family Cruciferae (mustard family).  film, ``Hollywood Homicide.''

``When I get a script, sometimes it goes on the bathroom floor because I have children and never have time to read stuff,'' explained ``Alias'' star Lena Olin, who had the lucky role of Ford's girlfriend in the movie. ``When you get a script with Harrison Ford set to star in it, it doesn't go on the floor!''

I bet. Ford's girlfriend Calista Flockhart was glued to her hunk's side as he made his way into the theater after signing a few autographs for screaming fans across the street.

The high-pitched howl of hundreds of girls signaled Hartnett's descent on the red carpet soon after the Ford frenzy. Co-stars Lolita Davidovich, Lou Diamond Phillips and Gladys Knight, who makes the music-to-movies transition in the film, each made a splash waving to the crowd.

The film won't hit theaters until the fall, but no one at the Sunset Room after-party could stop raving about the movie, an intense look at the underbelly of a Las Vegas casino.

William H. Macy plays the cooler, who is hired by Alec Baldwin's slimy character to turn casino winners into losers merely by standing next to them.

Maria Bello, Ron Livingston and Estella Warren each have memorable performances, and even Paul Sorvino steps in for a small role as a washed- up lounge singer.

``I know it's not cool to say you love your own film,'' confided director Wayne Kramer, ``but I have seen this thing a thousand times - and I am still enamored en·am·or

Baldwin was the sole cast member to venture down the block from the Arclight theater to the party, but he brought his brother William along to keep him company in the sealed-off VIP section.

Faye Dunaway made a random yet impressive appearance at the screening, as did Heather Graham. Christian Slater stopped by the party, and rumor had it that ``Memento'' hunk Guy Pearce was milling about on the smoking patio, which was outfitted with carpet and cushy cush·y
