Naturally, security was on red alert to prevent any form of possible piracy.

Even hip-hop rip-off.

Security forces walked through the crowd just before Kanye West performed after the fashion show. They passed the word that NO photos were to be taken of the rap star. Not even with cell phones.

An edict can be distinguished from a public proclamation in that an edict puts a new statute into effect whereas a public proclamation is no more than a declaration of a law
? We can only guess that maybe Kanye didn't like the fit of his Ferragamo suit and those oddly colored sneaker-like shoes. Can't say we blame him.

`FLAGS' SALUTE: Are director/producer Clint Eastwood and screenwriter Paul Haggis worried that ``Flags of Our Fathers'' might not do as well as their Oscar-winning ``Million Dollar Baby''?

``My dad doesn't seem to care what people think about his work,'' Scott Reeves, Eastwood's 20-year-old son, who has a small role in ``Flags,'' said before the premiere at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday night. ``His favorite quote is, `What can people do to me at my age?'

``But this is a great stepping stone for a young actor on the grind like me.''

Reeves, wearing a U.S Marine Corps pin in his lapel, walked the red carpet with Eastwood, Haggis, producer Steven Spielberg and other actors -- including Jesse Bradford, Barry Pepper, John Slattery, Paul Walker and Neal McDonough -- in the World War II epic about the men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima.

``I'm younger than Clint, but I have absolutely no expectations,'' said Haggis, who wrote and directed this year's Oscar-winning ``Crash.'' ``I can't even predict what type of messages people will read into the movie.''

Eastwood certainly looked relaxed at the reception following the premiere. The academy foyer was decorated with enlarged photographs taken during the Battle of Iwo Jima The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought between the United States and Japan in February and March 1945, during the Pacific Campaign of World War II. He chatted with Robert Wagner, Jill St. John, Morgan Freeman and Sumner Redstone amid a crowd that included Jason Priestley, Ray Romano, Quincy Jones, Doris Roberts, Frances Fisher and Eastwood's elder son, Kyle Eastwood, who did special musical arrangements for ``Flags.''

And what did Reeves think of the film?

``Pretty standard Eastwood movie,'' Reeves said at the after-party. ``It's a great piece of history, and you come out all watered up.''

CELEBS FOR KIDS: A bespectacled and disarmingly disheveled Johnny Depp appeared truly humbled when he was honored for his philanthropic contributions at the second annual Noche de Ninos Gala last weekend.

``Wow, this is about as touching as it gets,'' Depp said when Jennifer Lopez presented him with the Courage to Care Award at a benefit for patients at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. ``The courage that I've seen in the eyes of these little ones is astonishing a·ston·ish

But the real heroes in the ballroom at the Beverly Hilton weren't Depp or guests that included Jessica Simpson, Jerry Bruckheimer, Edward James Olmos Edward James Olmos (born February 24, 1947) is an Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated American actor and director. Some of his most memorable roles were Lt. That may have been what prompted Jeffrey Katzenberg to make a winning bid of $50,000. But it didn't please everyone.

``I was desperate for Billy Crystal's valet ticket,'' joked Depp. ``I've got his car keys.''

Then Depp concluded the evening by recounting something one of the hospital's young patients said before he died of cancer.

``Today is a gift,'' Depp quoted the young man. ``Just have fun!''

And that's what they did.
