THAT'S JAKE: Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams both skipped the premiere of ``Brokeback Mountain'' in Westwood on Tuesday to spend time with their 5-week-old daughter, Matilda Rose.

That made Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays Ledger's on-screen friend/lover, the focus of attention for Lindsay Lohan and other single women during the after party at the Napa Valley Grille.

Why the spurt of interest in the hot young Hollywood actor?

Because Gyllenhaal announced that he was available when he appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres talk show a few weeks ago. The 24-year-old star revealed that his on-again/off-again relationship with Kirsten Dunst is finally kaput with two little words: ``I'm single.''

Aha! Maybe that's why Sean Young (``Blade Runner'') kept asking photographer friends on the red carpet if Gyllenhaal had arrived with anyone (female). ``I just have to meet him,'' she told the lens men.

Is Young, 46, going for a Demi Moore/Ashton Kutcher career comeback move? It would be a pretty nifty stunt, befitting her premiere outfit: capri pants and a pink 'n' navy bomber jacket emblazoned with ``United Stunt Woman's Association.''

Lohan was much more discreet. She frequently caught Gyllenhaal's eye from a nearby table but refused to talk about the movie or the rumors that they've been dating (which, in Hollywood terminology, means that they've been seen in the same clubs at the same time).

``Lindsay loved the movie but doesn't want to talk because this is Jake's night,'' her publicist said.

But romance was in the air. Almost everyone at the party - including Jake's sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, as well as Peter Sarsgaard, Randy Quaid, Christian Slater, Chad Allen, Linda Cardellini and Kate Mara - talked about being touched by the intimate friendship/relationship between a ranch hand (Ledger) and a rodeo cowboy (Gyllenhaal) in the landscape-rich movie.

``Love stories haven't been told this way in a long time,'' Jake Gyllenhaal admitted before the premiere. ``Movies tend to avoid the struggles and trials that it takes to actually be in love and keep that going. If you find love, you should hold on to it.''

Watch out, Jake! Sean and Lindsay would probably agree.

TRUDIE LOVE: Sting proved he's every thinking woman's dream man at the Baccarat UNICEF Snowflake Ball on Wednesday night in Beverly Hills, by serenading Trudie Styler, his wife of 25 years, with ``Fields of Gold.'' Before he sang that beautiful song written for her, he made all the women in the glitzy Regent Beverly Wilshire ballroom sigh, saying, ``A man can't really tell his wife enough times how much he loves her or how beautiful she is. And I do this every day. But what I don't say enough, and I want to say this publicly right now, is how grateful I am for all you've given me - and the world - of your heart.''

Styler had just received the UNICEF Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award for her work as one of the organization's ambassadors, from Robert Downey Jr., who took the stage wearing dark shades, only to whip them off (after a rambling intro) to show a fake black eye that he claimed Sting had given him for flirting with Trudie. It was pretty strange, but the guy is supposed to be clean and sober these days, so apparently he's just odd no matter what. Less weird was CBS head honcho Leslie Moonves, who bussed buddy Mark Harmon and graciously accepted his Champion for Children Award by evoking the memory of UNICEF stalwart Audrey Hepburn. Other big-name, big-money advocates for children at this first Snowflake Ball were Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Cole, Chris Botti, Alyssa Milano, Isaiah Washington, Jane Kaczmarek, Jenna Elfman, Sumner Redstone and Barbara Davis, who all joined in the fantasy for the good cause and happily pretended for one night, at least, that winter snowflakes are an integral part of the Southern California holiday experience.

JEAN THERAPY: While Alyssa Milano got all dolled up and helped Baccarat light up Rodeo Drive with a giant crystal snowflake and posh chandeliers to launch the holiday season on Wednesday night, gaggles of gals gathered one street over to start their holiday shopping with a familiar brand in a new location. Carmen Electra called all her galpals, pulled on a pair of worn 501's, and hosted the grand opening of Levi's Jeans' new boutique on Beverly Drive.

Mena Suvari, Deborah Gibson and Bai Ling came early to take advantage of the 20-percent-off deal of the night, but at prices starting at $40, even paying list price wasn't too hard to take; definitely not the normal Beverly Hills price tag for jeans. ``The Bold and the Beautiful'' star Maeve Quinlan seemed to like the good deals, as did up-and-coming actresses Nikki Griffin (``The O.C.'') and Persia White (``Girlfriends'').

Electra, who owes her fame mostly to her figure, couldn't help a bit of gushing over the time-tested brand. ``I just love Levi's jeans. Everyone has that one pair of Levi's they've owned forever, and the older they get, the better they fit and feel. You never want to get rid of them.'' But always want to buy more, apparently. < WE SAW U
