TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.

Byline: Elizabeth Snead

READY, AIM, PUTT: Director Bill Paxton was overwhelmed with hugs and handshakes at the premiere party for his new film, ``The Greatest Game Ever Played,'' the inspiring, edge-of-your-seat true tale of a 20-year-old upstart (and his 10-year-old caddy A plastic container that holds a CD or DVD disc for added protection. ``Game'' is no pastoral period piece. Think ``Seabiscuit'' meets ``Wyatt Earp.'' Paxton, who stood near Tiger Woods during the 2004 L.A. Open, says, ``I looked in some of the top players eyes, and I realized these guys are gunfighters. It's kill or be killed.''

Added producer Larry Brezner, ``We knew Bill was our man when he said, 'I'm not making a golf film. I'm making ``Shootout Shootout

``Game'' is based on Mark Frost's book of the same title. Frost got the book idea watching Justin Leonard sink his winning Ryder Cup putt at the Brookline Country Club in '99. ``The announcer said, 'That's the same green where Francis Ouimet, a kid literally from the wrong side of the street, won the U.S. Open. His house is still right across the street.' And I realized Francis could see that green from his window. As a storyteller, a light went off.''

``Game'' may enlighten younger audiences. Shia LaBeouf, who plays Ouimet, used to think golf was lame. ``Then I took golf lessons for six months, seven hours a day, seven days a week, trained with the UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

SPIRIT OF LIFE: Melissa Etheridge can't figure out what all the fuss is about.

``It feels strange to be getting an award just for being myself,'' the singer confessed at Ford's 2005 Get Tied to the Cause Breast Cancer Awareness luncheon at the Hotel Bel-Air.

Yeah, right. She was just being herself at the recent Grammy Awards when she bravely took the stage, totally bald, to belt out a Janis Joplin tune with Joss Stone. Her baldness was due to chemotherapy for the cancer she was diagnosed with a year ago to the day of the luncheon. And that honest bravery is what earned her the Linda Mancuso Spirit of Life Award, given to her Monday by ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson's wife, Jennifer LaCorte McPherson. Steve, credited with reviving ABC's programming, was to present the award. But for undisclosed reasons, he was admitted to the hospital over the weekend and was still there Monday, according to his wife.

``It's ironic,'' Etheridge told the lovely lunch bunch, nibbling nibbling Nutrition The consumption of multiple–up to 17–'mini-meals' per day, as opposed to the usual 3 meals/day. Also at the lunch: Melissa's significant other, Tammy Lynn Michaels Tammy Lynn Michaels (born Tammy Lynn Doring November 26, 1974, in Lafayette, Indiana), also known by the surname Etheridge after exchanging vows with Melissa Etheridge,[1] is an American actress. , along with Lisa Kudrow, Jessica Capshaw and Decades owner Cameron Silver, whose vintage designer duds were auctioned off for the cause.
