TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.

Byline: Elizabeth Snead and Joel Stratte-McClure

FASHION FORWARD: Why does Mena Suvari love Marni, a small Italian women's line? ``There are very few designers that do clothes that are just totally me,'' she explains. ``The colors, the textures, the jewelry, the shoes. I've been dragging my husband to their New York New York, state, United States

Hostess Danes swept into the Tuesday cocktail party (mysteriously dry considering the downpour!) wearing a Marni turquoise satin gown with a twisted leather belt and a burlap bag. Seriously, the purse was made of burlap.

Suvari, in a twine-belted red and white printed frock, talked about the effect of dying her blond hair black. ``I'm having fun with it, but no one recognizes me,'' she marveled. ``Even my husband loses me at parties. He keeps looking for Looking for

But there's one perk. ``Someone wrote in the Fashion Police on E! Online that I look like Angelina Jolie. It's crazy, but I'm very flattered. I think she's stunning.''

MAKING A SPLASH: Forget Joan Collins' scandalous ``Dynasty'' pool fight.

There's a hot new British brunette stirring up the swimming pool on Showtime's hit series ``The L Word.''

Rachel Shelley's character, Helena, a wealthy art collector, will give museum director Bette (Jennifer Beals) a serious (and sexy) run for her money over her ex-gal pal Tina, (Laurel Holloman), pregnant with their surrogate baby. Let's just say there is an upcoming pool scene that will be a first in TV history.

Shelley, a stage-trained actress born in Swindon, England, has been in films such as ``Photographing Fairies,'' ``Everybody Loves Sunshine'' and ``The Bone Snatcher.'' She sent in a self-made audition tape for ``Word,'' was flown to L.A., and left the next day to start shooting ``Word'' in Vancouver.

But that wasn't her first time in the fast lane. She starred in the Bollywood film ``Lagaan,'' which was nominated for a foreign film Oscar last year. Naturally, the cast was ``celebrating'' the night before the ceremony. ``I woke up with a bit of a hangover, and the producers called me to say I had a seat 90 minutes before the show began. I went by myself and rode in the limo with wet hair. I felt like someone's poor cousin.''

Unlike her ``Word'' character, Shelley has a very nice boyfriend: British writer/director Matthew Parkhill, whose film ``Dot the I'' (starring Gael Garcia Bernal) is currently playing at the Nuart Theatre. ``Ain't It Cool News'' dubs it ``This year's 'Memento.' ''

A PERFECT GEN: Wednesday was a real two-fer night in West Hollywood.

The pricey furniture store was turned into a rockin' disco with a real live KCRW KCRW Kansas City Roller Warriors (women's roller derby league; Kansas City, Missouri)  DJ, colored lights, fab food and lots of pretty, fashionable people.

But Ratner left the very noisy and crowded Gen Art bash early for a more polite and intellectual gathering at the Argyle hotel: Departures magazine's party to celebrate its new L.A. issue.

Wonder if Ratner, who recently penned a scathing first-person piece titled ``Why I Hate the Hotel du Crap'' for Variety's V-Life magazine, might want to write more opinionated o·pin·ion·at·ed

While Teen Screen Queens Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff are out partying, Amanda Bynes stays fit 'n' focused. The sweats-clad actress was spotted in Tevia Celli's spin class at Body and Soul Workout on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. Now that's ``What a Girl Wants.''
