It is known for offering some of the prominent racing events in the United States during the autumn and in winter. Racing at Santa Anita began in 1934.  last weekend.

``It's the first time I've been to the races and I know nothing about horses or betting,'' said Bernard, who donated his $9,000 overall take to P.S. Arts, a Santa Monica charity that promotes arts education in L.A. schools.

His secret?

Celebrity Handicapping Contest. Each star was given $5,000 and the winner could give up to $250,000 to a favorite charity.

``Gambling's in my blood and I've been playing here constantly since 1985,'' said Garson, a celebrity poker veteran whose father was a semi- professional blackjack blackjack, one of the world's most widely played gambling card games; also known as twenty-one or vingt-et-un. Each loser - including young actress Tatyana Ali, ``Charmed'' star Holly Marie Combs, Scott Patterson from ``The Gilmore Girls,'' ``Antwone Fisher'' star Derek Luke, comedian Paul Rodriguez and Nicholas Gonzalez - had his or her own technique.

``I had my people shadow Garson to find out what he played,'' lamented Patterson. ``It didn't work.''

``I rode to the track with a buddy who's a professional gambler,'' said Gonzalez, who has switched shows, moving from ``The O.C.'' to ``Law & Order.'' ``It didn't rub off.''

``I was being really nice, asking for help and hoping for some luck,'' said Ali, who appears in the upcoming ``Glory Road'' with Luke, who claimed that ``I can tell a good horse by its looks.''

The $5,000 wasn't the only money that King, who had a race named after him on Sunshine Millions Day, wagered. He peeled bills off a large roll of cash at betting windows throughout the afternoon.

``I've had zero success at horse racing, but I keep trying,'' said King.

READY TO RUMBLE: Wrestling champ Dwayne ``The Rock'' Johnson has certainly filled Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's action-hero shoes.

And then some.

He's starred in two action-packed ``Scorpion King'' flicks, ``The Rundown,'' ``Walking Tall'' and makes his comedic debut in Elmore Leonard's upcoming sequel to ``Get Shorty short·y also short·ie   Informal

But the Rockster isn't ruling out less-action-oriented roles. In the new issue of Playboy, Johnson considers a romantic scene with another man.

``It would depend on a few variables. What kind of toothpaste is he using? Is he ruggedly handsome like me? Does he have nice lips? Then he might have a shot. A wise man once told me that a warm pair of lips is a warm pair of lips.''
