LET THERE BE LIGHT: Jim Carrey has hair again

Carrey, without that weird bald head he's been sporting for ages, looked natty in a charcoal gray suit at Thursday's DVD launch party for ``Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.''

He and ``Mind'' co-star Kate Winslet, glam, slim and tan in a black sheath, with director hubby Sam Mendes, attended the blowout bash held in the building across from Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The party was wittily decorated using props from the film, including medical brain scanner rooms, the reception waiting area and an oversize '50s kitchen set used to simulate Carrey's childhood memory scenes in the film. Everyone snarfed up the sushi served by waitresses in nurse uniforms, hit the s'mores station and guzzled blue Memory Erasure drinks (Hypnotiq, Bacardi and white cranberry juice).

As a Universal DVD marketing exec welcomed the crowd and struggled to be heard over the party din, Carrey leapt up from his seat, shouting, ``Hey, c'mon! It's rude! It's just rude!'' He was just kidding, but his shushing worked as fast as the Lacuna memory zapper.

At the stroke of 9-ish, guests including Alessandro Nivola and wife Emily Mortimer, as well as Jason Behr, Mark Ruffalo and Victor Garber gathered near the stage to hear Beck play ``Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime'' with ``Mind'' director Michel Gondry on keyboards. Seems Gondry was in a pop-rock band called Oui-Oui in France. Carrey could be seen bopping and having a good time in the official mosh pit as Beck and the band played a mixture of the pop-rocker's tunes and dance music.

Will the clever DVD party make academy members remember ``Mind'' at Oscar voting time? That's the plan.

THEY'RE ALL (HEART): Jude Law was a no-show at Wednesday's premiere of ``I (Heart) Huckabees'' at The Grove, L.A.'s open-air mall that feels like a small town.

But David O. Russell, writer/director of the quirky comedy, stepped in for the British actor when he introduced the cast before the film started.

``I love L.A. and I have six movies coming out before Christmas,'' said Russell in a passably posh British accent. ``But this is definitely my favorite.''

Other ``Huckabees'' stars - Naomi Watts, Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg and Isabelle Huppert - were on hand and hit the after-party in the old FAO Schwarz store.

The stars discussed the film's mixed messages in the converted ``Huckabees'' outlet decorated with a huge rock, taped-off marshland, firefighter's boots and other metaphysical props from the movie.

`` 'Huckabees' embraces the absurdities of our species with many layers of satire,'' said Tomlin, who plays a psychic detective.

``In reality, I hate these large corporations who take out small businesses all the time,'' added Watts, who plays the Huckabees Girl in the film and on the Web site (www.huckabees.com). ``And they'll have to pay me more if they keep me on the Web site.''

``The film raises issues that will make people ask questions and get involved,'' said Wahlberg, who plays a firefighter seeking the meaning of life. ``Just before elections is a great time to encourage everyone to demand some changes.''

But Schwartzman says the message is very clear and very simple.

``This film should teach us all to wrap ourselves in a blanket and just relax,'' said Schwartzman, struggling to be Zen after a late arrival due to traffic. ``We're all too stressed.''

UNDER HIS WING: Diet-conscious Christopher Walken sure didn't snarf chicken at any of the KFCs he had to visit on the multigenerational road trip from ``Around the Bend,'' his new family dramedy.

``He barely nibbled at it,'' confided Jordan Roberts, ``Bend'' writer/director, at the Tuesday premiere in Hollywood. ``And he sure didn't lick his fingers.''

But Walken did befriend Jonah Bobo, 7, his on-screen grandson, at one KFC.

``I ate way too much chicken in one scene and Chris was the only one who truly realized that I was going to barf,'' said Bobo. ``I was really happy when he passed me an empty chicken bucket. But I never want to go to KFC ever again.''

Walken's gesture and heart-breaking performance as a deadbeat drug addict dad, which won the best actor prize at the Montreal Film Festival, impressed Roberts.

``Chris is such a warm, cuddly guy that I wanted to hug and kiss him,'' the director joked. ``But I knew that he would kill me.''

Walken, renowned as a picky eater, wouldn't talk about KFC, or anything else, at the premiere. And he didn't eat chicken at the after-party in the Directors Guild Association lobby.

One reason he always stays at the nearby Chateau Marmont is because his room has a kitchen and he frequently cooks his meals after buying fresh produce and wine at Bristol Farms and Vons/Pavillons in West Hollywood.

So why were there so many KFCs in the heart-warming autobiographical film also starring Michael Caine and Josh Lucas?

``I ate at Kentucky Fried Chicken with my own grandfather as a kid,'' Roberts recalled. ``It was important that part of the family journey take place in a plastic environment that truly embodies our culture.''

we saw U: Talk about a stylish political statement. Jessica Alba at the Newsroom in West Hollywood wearing a trucker hat, hot pink tee, Juicy sweats and a cream Dior bag with gold trim.

Britney Spears was seen shopping up a storm at Fred Segal in the trendy sportswear department just a few days before her faux wedding bash. Honeymoon sweats, maybe?

Kirk Douglas and his wife, Anne, dining at Il Sole on Sunset (fave restaurant of the ``Friends' cast). Just as he left, Lionel Richie and a pretty date came in and requested the same table.

Kevin Richardson (Backstreet Boys) shopping alone at the Energie boutique on Melrose. He bought a pair of Merker trousers (size 34) and a Sobiro beanie hat and told the staff he shopped at their boutiques in Italy while on tour there.

Famke Janssen hit Miss Sixty on Melrose for a pair of Mary J trousers (size 31). She wore a pair for a photo shoot and wanted to buy the same style. Then she left wearing them. Now that's instant gratification.
