The event also spotlighted the top songwriters from last year, including Rick Nowels, who received the Song of the Year award for the single ``The Game of Love,'' which was a smash hit for Michelle Branch and Santana.

A NIGHT FOR MOM: Could it be true? Will Courteney Cox-Arquette give birth to twins, echoing the final episode of ``Friends?'' ``None of us know!'' swore Rosanna Arquette at the 38th annual City Lights benefit Thursday night in Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. . ``But they're very excited and we can't wait to see who comes out.'' Guess we'll just have to wait two more months for the finale.

The Arquette clan - Rosanna, Patricia, Alexis and a very late-arriving David - came to the Beverly Hilton Hotel to accept an award in honor of their activist mom, Mardi Arquette, who died in 1997. She worked and trained at the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. ``People who met my mom at the SCCC used to come up to me and say 'Your mom saved our marriage' or 'Your mom saved my life,' '' recalled Patricia, now spending much of her time with 15-month-old daughter Harlow. ``I'm really happy that she's being recognized in this way because all of her social work was pro bono Short for pro bono publico [Latin, For the public good]. The Arquette kids also recall their mother's aggressive social stance. ``She laid in front of the wheels of a bus to force the driver to let a man in a wheelchair get on,'' said Rosanna. The incident took place in Chicago in the '60s when Rosanna was just 6.

 Thursday night.

But they weren't there just for the cool music, trendy snacks or to check out the Sama shades seen on Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Pamela Anderson, Robin Williams, Robert Downey Jr., Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones. They were really there to help stop the all-too familiar horror of heroin addiction.

Sama founder Sheial Vance's son Sam died of a heroin overdose at 19 and a percentage of the eyewear sales go to Friendly House, a nonprofit residence for women in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Also in the crowd: Leitch's supermodel wife, Kristy Hume, sister Ione Skye and Virginia Madsen, Freddy Rodriguez (``Six Feet Under''), Courtney Peldon, jewelry designer Loree Rodkin and Thora Birch (``Ghost World,'' ``American Beauty'').

``My first pair of Sama sunglasses is 4 years old but I still get compliments on them,'' said Birch, who is producing/starring in the film ``Vinyl,'' about the girlfriends and wives of a rising '80s band.

Fittingly, Sama is making retro glasses for some of the film's shady characters.

Spotted last week getting their regular Mystic Tans at Le Beach Club on Robertson Boulevard: Paris Hilton, Tori Spelling, Emily Proctor, Lisa Kudrow and that old ``Six Million Dollar Man'' Lee Majors. No, not together. That would just be too weird.
