TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.Byline: Elizabeth Snead KILLER' PARTY: From the wacky Coen brothers (Joel and Ethan) who brought us ``O Brother, Where Art Thou?'' comes a brand-new demented comedy titled ``The Ladykillers.'' The hotel's interior was transformed into a Mississippi grand house with sitting, dining and drawing rooms decorated with Victorian furniture, floral wallpaper, china knickknacks, lace doilies on claw-footed tables and - natch - stacks of counterfeit bills. Guests chowed down on fried green tomatoes, spiced corn off the cob, fried chicken, taters and turnip turnip, garden vegetable of the same genus of the family Cruciferae (mustard family) as the cabbage; native to Europe, where it has been long cultivated. The two principal kinds are the white (Brassica rapa) and the yellow (B. greens. Hanks, with wife Rita Wilson, wearing a gold trench coat and lots of gold chains, made the rounds of the par-tay talking to pals and fans. Oscar-nominated musician T-Bone Burnett (``Cold Mountain'') hung out with the Coens, with whom he had worked on the Grammy-winning ``O Brother'' soundtrack. ``I've heard all my life that rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music. was born from gospel music, but it wasn't until I went back and listened to the whole canon of gospel from the last century that I realized it really did all come from gospel,'' Burnett said with a laugh. ``So what we've done is to go back and rediscover some of the great gospel music that people have left behind.'' Before the night was over, the party's patient stragglers were entertained by Burnett, belting out a little bit of gospel. Can we get an amen? B&B BIRTHDAY BASH: It was quite the scene at the Spider Club at the Avalon as Bruce Willis and Brooke Burns celebrated their close- together-in-day-but-not-in-year birthdays. The party didn't bother with any of the normal Hollywood hoopla hoop·la n. Informal 1. a. Boisterous, jovial commotion or excitement. b. Extravagant publicity: The new sedan was introduced to the public with much hoopla. 2. . Yes, there was cake and champagne, but the party wasn't even private - no guest list, no red carpet, no massive security. Just some of Hollywood's biggest names hanging out for the celebration of Bruce's 49th (his is March 19, 1955) and Brooke's 26th (hers is March 16, 1978), all rubbing shoulders with anyone who happened to hit the club that night. It was all one cozy family affair, too, as Bruce's ex-wife Demi Moore turned up with her own version of May-December romance, hottie Ashton Kutcher, who sported a white skullcap skull·cap n. See calvaria. skullcap, n Latin names: Scutellaria laterifolia, Scutellaria baicalensis; and a matching white cigarette hanging languidly out of his mouth. Older pals Jack Nicholson and Joe Pesci joined the party, too, along with Kevin Costner and his young- enough-to-be-his-daughter fiance Christine Baumgartner. Is there a trend in this crowd, or what? Cozy definitely described longtime off-again, on-again couple Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith (they have married and divorced each other twice over the past 25 years). Both looked a bit rough around the edges but seemed happy to jump into the party spirit nonetheless. The teen set was represented by Scarlett Johansson, who - being just 19 - found sucking on a lollipop more fun than trying to score a date with one of Bruce's many 50-ish friends who came out for the celebration; does she know something the rest of Hollywood hasn't figured out? Kevin Pollack showed up with an antique electric guitar for Bruce, but Willis didn't strike up the band. Instead, DJ Kelly Cole spun records all night, as the partygoers danced the night away. We haven't heard what Bruce plans to do on his actual birthday, but at least he had a week to recover from his party! CAPTION(S): 2 photos Photo: (1) BURNETT: The gospel according to T-Bone.
