TINSELTOWN SPYWITNESS.

Byline: Elizabeth Snead

SPANNING THE GLOBES: It was business as usual Sunday at the glittering Golden Globes after-parties - the entertainment business, that is. When the awards ceremony ended, all the happy winners (and some sore losers) raced around the Beverly Hilton Hotel trying to make political pit stops to as many parties as possible.

New Line's bash was a safe harbor for the night's big winner, ``Lord of the Rings' '' New Zealand director Peter Jackson, clutching one of the four Golden Globes his ``Return of the King'' received. ``The award is a wonderful climax to seven years of hard work for everyone,'' Jackson said. ``But it's also a sad night because our journey together has come to an end. It feels a bit like sailing to Rivendell.''

Happy ``Rings'' stars Elijah Wood and Dominic Monaghan were ready to party like wild Hobbits In J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium, Hobbits are a fictional race related to Men. They first appear in The Hobbit and play an important role in the The Lord of the Rings story.

. So were ``Saturday Night Live's'' Jimmy Fallon and funny man Jack Black, who stood near Eva Mendes, hot to trot in her gold and white Missoni halter-neck gown.

At the Miramax party, sponsored by Glamour magazine, Queen Latifah hugged Diane Lane, Tom Cruise shared a laugh with Jim Belushi, and Anthony Minghella congratulated his Globe-winning star Renee Zellweger. Scarlett Johansson showed off her De Beers wildflower wildflower

Also there were Ellen DeGeneres, Hugh Hefner, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Traci Bingham.

Two moments vie for highlight of the Access bash: either Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey singing a duet, or Lachey trying to out-burp Simpson for the cameras. Hmmm. We pick the latter.

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones stopped by the Access party briefly. Dapper Douglas, who held his career-achievement Globe, chuckled at the fact that he got his first Golden Globe nomination the year his wife was born.

party was populated with their big winners - Meryl Streep, Al Pacino and Sarah Jessica Parker along with Hope Davis, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall, looking luscious in a pale pink chiffon one-shouldered gown. Parker, wearing a couture Chanel gray chiffon gown, was blown away by her best actress Globe win but couldn't help feeling sad. ``I've only got nine more days of shooting, and it's really becoming very sad to think of leaving all my friends. I have the best crew in the world!''

Up at the rooftop Universal/Focus Films party, Kelly Lynch and her producer hubby, Mitch Glazer, sat with his Globe-winning ``Lost in Translation'' director Sofia Coppola, who was wearing a short black velvet Azzedine Alaia dress, and Globe-winning star Bill Murray. Quentin Tarantino sat at her table, soaking up the attention before leaving with a pack of pals. On his way out, a bearded dude grabbed his arm and said, ``I've got a script for you.'' Nia Vardalos, who just wrapped her new romantic comedy, ``Connie and Carla,'' summed up the night best: ``I thought this year's Golden Globes was just great. They gave some awards to this movie, some to that one. It was very nicely divided so that everyone got something. No one felt left out.''

And isn't that just so Hollywood?
