No one dared knock the rock after this weekend. MR. NOYCE GUY: Tuesday night marked a memorable moment for Australian director Phillip Noyce (``The Quiet American,'' ``Patriot Games'') with the rare screening of the remastered cut of his 1978 movie ``Newsfront'' at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, as part of the Down Under Wonder series for ScreenSound Australia. To celebrate the movie's 25th anniversary, the American Cinematheque The American Cinematheque is an independent, non-profit cultural organization in Los Angeles dedicated exclusively to the public presentation of the Moving Image in all its forms. It is considered among the premier organizations of its kind in America. (whose programs expose audiences to a full spectrum of filmmaking) and Austrade invited guests to enjoy an array of Australian meats, cheeses and wines while listening to live music prior to the screening. The movie starring Bryan Brown, Bill Hunter and Wendy Hughes was Noyce's attempt to re-create the social and political landscape of Australia during the 1950s. He strung historical events together through the accounts of two rival newsreel companies competing for footage of the era's biggest stories. Using a blend of actual black-and-white newsreel footage and color narrative, it was an ingenious look at how television's instant images wiped out the newsreel industry. Guests included actress Leelee Sobieski. Noyce conducted a question- and-answer session after the movie. Many were complimentary about the movie's re-format. Noyce explained that, for years, ``Newsfront'' had been seen only in full-screen format on television and video, an out-of-date transfer that was done with now out-of-date technology. In cinemas, though, no decent print of the film existed, and it was the mediocre 20-year-old print used for an anniversary screening at the Sydney Film Festival that spurred Noyce to push for the film's restoration. ``Never before has `Newsfront' looked this good,'' commented Noyce. You can be your own judge, though, now that ``Newsfront'' can be found on DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc. DVD in full digital video disc or digital versatile disc Type of optical disc. The DVD represents the second generation of compact-disc (CD) technology. .
