Thursday night to celebrate the premiere of ``American Splendor'' at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, for the film is the celebration of the life of ultimate nerd Harvey Pekar.

The Cleveland file clerk turned underground comic creator arrived in style with his wife (and collaborator) Joyce Brabner Joyce Brabner (born 1952) is a writer of political comics and sometimes collaborator with her husband Harvey Pekar. As Pekar's third wife, she has appeared as a character in many of his American Splendor stories. . Both seemed slightly bewildered by the excitement generated by the film, an audience favorite and award winner at both Cannes and Sundance.

Word had obviously gotten out that ``American Splendor'' is the little movie that could, for such diverse celebrities as Anne Heche, Eric Idle, Lesley Ann Warren, Eric Stoltz and Paul Mazursky all made the scene, along with the film's Judah Friedlander Judah Friedlander (born March 16, 1969) is a comedian and actor, known for his trademark trucker's hats, oversized glasses and unkempt appearance, which he retains in most of his screen roles. , Madylin Sweeten, Jeff Peters, Donal Logue and directors Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman.

Paul Giamatti, whose performance as Pekar is generating the first real Oscar buzz of the season, couldn't believe the turnout - or the complete transformation of the roof of the parking lot of the Arclight Cinemas.

``It's shocking,'' he said, laughing. ``This premiere is amazing, and all the stuff that has happened is just incredible.'' It was pretty incredible to see Pekar's living room re-created and bathed in white lights, along with huge blow-ups of his comic book covers, retro cars and other kitsch from the '70s and '80s designed to match the movie's setting. And the food matched, too - White Castle hamburgers, Winchell's doughnuts and gourmet jelly beans were the order of the evening, just like in the flick. But happily partygoers were treated to a picture-perfect California evening, a gorgeously clear night, instead of the freezing-cold Cleveland winters that characterize the film.

Alec and Stephen Baldwin were on hand to support their friends while actor Beau Bridges was most excited about seeing Curtis' famous mother, Janet Leigh. Cast members Harold Gould and the jaw-droppingly handsome Chad Michael Murray Chad Michael Murray (born August 24, 1981) is an American actor, former male fashion model and teen idol. He is perhaps best known for his role as Lucas Scott in The CW series One Tree Hill.  (``Gilmore Girls'') were at ease reminiscing about filming while director Mark Waters was slammed with questions as to how this remake differs from the original 1977 version.

``It's a brand-new movie,'' Waters stated. ``We kept the title and premise but made it much more 21st century by focusing on some of the issues that mothers and daughters face today.''

The kids seemed to agree as they rushed toward the arcade games, makeovers, sandal decorating and costume picture-taking. Danny Bonaduce (``The Other Half'') joined the fun by dressing up as a knight with his kids, but it was Curtis who really let loose by making music requests to the DJ and hanging out with daughter Annie and friends. It may just be that in real life Jamie Lee Curtis is a teenage girl stuck in a woman's body. It's, well - freaky!

CHAUD: The French Riviera is seriously simmering.

Temperatures on the topless Cote d'Azur beaches are hitting the high 90s, making this the hottest reported summer since 1976. But vacationing stars are adding to the heat wave.

``Friends'' star Lisa Kudrow and her husband, French advertising exec Michel Stern, are on vacation in Preconil, a charming village in the Saint- Maxime area, perilously close to the fires that raged the week before. But they hit Saint-Tropez for a long lunch on the beach. Afterward Kudrow stopped by the Jacques Dessange salon for a massage, haircut and blow dry. Wonder if she was getting dolled up for dinner or for the Lionel Richie or Bill Wyman concerts being held in nearby Monaco.
