TIME WARNER TO BUY 1 MILLION TV-TOP UNITS.

Time Warner Inc. plans to spend an estimated $400 million to $450 million in three years for 1 million set-top television boxes from Scientific-Atlanta Inc. and others.

The boxes can deliver digital video, Internet access See how to access the Internet.  and interactive viewing guides to Time Warner's cable-TV customers. The boxes may help Time Warner compete against direct satellite broadcasters, which offer more channels and better reception.

Scientific-Atlanta will provide 550,000 of the digital set-top boxes The cable TV box that sits on "top" of the TV "set," although it is often located several feet away in an equipment rack. The set-top box descrambles the premium channels and provides a tuner for the higher cable numbers that very old TVs did not support.  for which Time Warner said it will pay slightly less than $400 each. Scientific-Atlanta will license their technology to Pioneer Electronic Corp. and Toshiba Corp., which will produce the remaining boxes.
