TIME WARNER NEWS CHANNEL TO CREATE TV NEWS PROGRAM
 FEATURING THE NEW YORK TIMES
NEW YORK, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- New York 1 News, Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) all-news cable television channel for New York City to be launched in September, will produce a nightly program in association with The New York Times (AMEX: NYT.A) to explore in depth issues that are important to the city.
The program, called "New York Closeup," will include discussions with reporters from the staff of The Times. The show will be broadcast live from 11:15 p.m. to midnight on Sunday through Thursday evenings and will be carried on all of Time Warner's cable systems that serve the city.
The announcement was made today jointly by Richard Aurelio, president of the Time Warner New York City Cable Group and New York 1 News, and by Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher of The Times.
"We are pleased to be associated with this program in cooperation with The New York Times," Aurelio said. "With the participation of The Times' expert journalists, we believe this television program can make an important contribution to a better understanding of important city issues."
"New York Closeup" will be anchored by a regular host who will be joined by a changing panel of journalists from The Times and New York 1 News as well as newsmaker guests. The production will include viewer call-inn segments, taped reports and two-way remote interviews.
"This will be one of our most important signature programs," said Paul Sagan, vice president of news and programming for New York 1 News.
Sulzberger Jr. said: "The New York Times is committed to providing thorough news coverage of the metropolitan area, and we are pleased to be working with Time Warner in the production of 'New York Closeup.'" In the past six months, The Times has increased its daily Metro report, had added Metro news reporters and has introduced a new stand-alone Metro report in Sunday's paper.
New York 1 News, a basic 24-hour news and feature service devoted exclusively to New York City, will be launched in September and initially will reach some 800,000 cable subscribers. The service will be carried on Channel 1 to every home served by Manhattan Cable Television (MCTV), Paragon Cable Manhattan (PCM), Brooklyn Queens Cable (BQ Cable), American Cablevision of Queens (ACQ) and Queens Inner Unity Cable (QUICS).
