TIME WARNER INTERACTIVE GROUP TO PRODUCE CD-ROM FOR LIBRARY ON MARS; FIRST INTERACTIVE PUBLISHER TO PLACE PRODUCTS ON ANOTHER PLANET

BURBANK, Calif., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Time Warner Interactive Group (formerly Warner New Media), a division of Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX), will announce plans to product "Visions of Mars" on CD-ROM in a strategic alliance with The Planetary Society in agreement with the Russian Space Research Institute.
The announcement will be made at a June 22 press conference at The Explorers Club at 46 E. 70th St. in New York City beginning at 10 a.m. Dr. Carl Sagan, president of the Planetary Society, and Geoff Holmes, senior vice president, technology, Time Warner Inc., will participate in the conference.
"Vision of Mars," published under the Time Warner Interactive Group label, will travel aboard the spaceship "Mars 94" and will land on the red planet in September 1995. A copy of the CD-ROM product will be placed inside each of the two small stations which will land on the Martian surface.
"Visions of Mars" will contain several thousand pages of classic science fiction short stories and novel excerpts, plus selected sounds and images which chronicle humanity's fascination with Mars. Works from many writers including H.G. Wells, Isaac Asimov and Kurt Vonnegut are included, along with the famous Orson Welles radio broadcast of "War of the Worlds."
The spacecraft will carry a plaque which will include a microdot with technical information about its operations -- in English, Finnish, French, German and Russian.
Time Warner Interactive Group (TWIG) will work with The Planetary Society and scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to produce a flight disc that will withstand a 200G impact on landing. All of this work will be performed at the interactive publisher's headquarters in Burbank. "Visions of Mars" will support Macintosh as well as IBM and compatible personal computers.
In addition to "Visions of Mars," TWIG also produced "Murmurs of Earth" which is a two audio-CD set containing the music which was carried aboard the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. The discs also include computer data which, when played on a CD-ROM drive, will display color images of life on Earth. This commemorative CD set also comes with the book "Murmurs of Earth" by Carl Sagan and the Voyager team. The book describes how these color images and two hours of music and audio were chosen for the original Voyager disc.
