TIME TO HORSE AROUND WITH RIDING AND ROPING, RODEO RETURNS TO PALMDALE.

PALMDALE -- Two weekends of riding, roping, barn dances, tamales and mariachi mariachi

Traditional Mexican street ensemble. The performer, the musical style, and the musical ensemble are called mariachi. Mariachi music emerged in the late 1700s or early 1800s.

In a temporary arena and corrals set up on a soccer field, the annual Showdown Rodeo rodeo (rō`dēō, rōdā`ō), public exhibition of the skill of cowboys in various activities. ``It really does go back to our roots. I think there's something for everybody,'' Mayor Jim Ledford said.

Admission is free to this weekend's preliminary events, except for tonight's Miss Showdown Rodeo dinner. Admission is $15 to the June 2 bull riding and the June 3 rodeo, and $12 for the June 4 rodeo.

Nearly 7,000 spectators attended last year's rodeo at the park, 39101 3rd St. E. Some 5,000 people attended the tamale festival, which this year will feature seven mariachi bands and Hispanic equestrian events.

 rodeo, Showdown Rodeo committee chairman Johnny Zamrzla said.

The June 2 bull-riding competions entrants include world champion Matt Austin, he said.

``We have some great names,'' Zamrzla said.

This is the third year that the rodeo will take place at Desert Sands Park, but it was held in Lancaster for years before that. The rodeo moved to the park from the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds n. pl. 1. same as fairground.  after the fair moved to west Lancaster.

To make the arena, sod was lifted from a park field. The sod will be returned after the rodeo.

``It'll be replaced and growing before soccer season,'' Zamrzla said.

TODAY

Rodeo queen contest and horsemanship horsemanship: see equestrianism.

Art of training, riding, and handling horses. Good horsemanship requires that a rider control the animal's direction, gait, and speed with maximum effectiveness and minimum effort.
 judging at 11 a.m., with the queen dinner at 6:30 p.m. Dinner tickets are $12 a person.

SATURDAY

Barrel races start at 1 p.m. Admission is free for spectators.

SUNDAY

Antelope Valley Youth Rodeo Association events begin at 8 a.m. Admission is free for spectators.

MONDAY

Tamale Festival and Hispanic equestrian events run from noon to 8 p.m. Admission is free.

Old West-style mounted shooting competition runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

JUNE 2

Gates open at 5 p.m. for Xtreme bull riding, which begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Dancing and music by Gis Johannsson being at 9:30 p.m.

JUNE 3

Gates open at 4 p.m. for How the West Was Fun festival with games for youngsters and live music. Admission is free.

JUNE 4

Cowboy church Cowboy Churches are local Christian churches within the cowboy culture that are distinctively western heritage in character. A typical cowboy church may meet in a rural setting in a barn, metal building, arena, sale barn or old western building, have its own rodeo arena, and a  service begins at 9 a.m. Admission is free.

Pancake breakfast is served beginning at 10 a.m. Cost is $3 a person.

How the West Was Fun festival with family games, pie-eating contest and other events begins at 11 a.m. Admission is free.

Professionwal Armwrestling Conference competition begins at 11:30 a.m.

PRCA Showdown Rodeo begins at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12.
