TIME NEAR FOR PREP RECRUITS.Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer With seven days remaining before football's national signing day National Signing Day is the first day a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent for college football. Although there are numerous signing periods for college sports, this is the one that is most followed. It always falls on the first Wednesday in February. , Sylmar High linebacker Josh Martin and St. Francis of La Canada tight end Nathan Terrazone are the region's hottest uncommitted prep prospects. Martin, the Daily News' preseason No. 1 linebacker, was the biggest reason the Spartans went 11-1 this past season. The 6-foot-2, 218-pounder had more than 100 tackles, and as a tight end had 23 catches for 412 yards and four touchdowns. Terrazone, 6-3, 220, had 43 receptions for 528 yards and four touchdowns, and was a key linebacker. Coincidentally, both were offered scholarships by Arizona State before coach Bruce Snyder was fired in November. Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman said Arizona and Colorado State also offered Martin a scholarship. But Engilman said Arizona ``cooled'' and Colorado State signed someone else when Martin didn't commit fast enough. ``Josh is a good player and a good kid. I have no idea why Josh doesn't have offers,'' said Greg Biggins, recruiting director for Student Sports magazine. ``I would think the top linebacker in the City Section would have a lot of offers.'' Martin, who scored 1070 on his SAT and has a 3.2 grade-point average, plans to visit with coaches from Iowa State this week. He also is considering Navy, according to Engilman. --Scott . . . might not: Things don't look good for former Alemany of Mission Hills running back De'Andre Scott, who entered the football season as California's No. 1 running back prospect before struggling and then transferring to league rival St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe Springs, city (1990 pop. 15,520), Los Angeles co., SW Calif., inc. 1957. The city lies in an oil and natural gas region and has diversified manufacturing. late in the season. ``Well, De'Andre has about a 2.0 overall grade-point average and he finally took the SAT for the first time last week,'' St. Paul coach Marijon Ancich said. ``We've been trying to get him to take it, but he hemmed and hawed on it. He has a learning disability and they gave him a reader to go with him. Nebraska and Miami are interested in him, but he might have to go to a JC. He needs to get himself going.'' --Heading south: Six Monroe of North Hills players - linemen Wilquin Garcia and Lamar Smith, linebackers John King and Lanell Derby, defensive back Jeff Young and quarterback Steve Beltran - have committed to Paul Quinn College Paul Quinn College is the oldest African-American liberal arts college in Texas. It was founded in 1872 in Austin, Texas, and was named after William Paul Quinn (1788-1873), the fourth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The College is affiliated with the AME church. in Dallas, an 800-student NAIA NAIA abbr. National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes college. ``I don't have any connections there,'' Monroe coach Chris Richards said. ``I just got on the horn, sent out tape and they liked what they saw.''
