TIME FOR SHARING; PUPILS TO PLAY ON NEW EQUIPMENT.

Byline: Orith Goldberg Staff Writer

Emblem Elementary School elementary school: see school.  parents figured they could work together to replace decades-old playground equipment, but even they were surprised when they managed to raise $50,000 in just one month.

Knowing it would be difficult for the Saugus Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  to come up with the money, Courtney McIntyre and Kelli Anderson, both members of the school's Parent Teacher Association, wrote letters to local businesses and other parents, seeking money for the equipment.

Donations poured in and the PTA PTA or parent-teacher association: see parent education.  members realized that they had raised $50,000, exceeding their original objective by $10,000. The extra money will go toward replacing the equipment in the kindergarten kindergarten [Ger.,=garden of children], system of preschool education. Friedrich Froebel designed (1837) the kindergarten to provide an educational situation less formal than that of the elementary school but one in which children's creative play instincts would be  area.

``It all just fell together quickly and we were all really surprised,'' said PTA member Dianne Ashley.

On Saturday, volunteers packing the necessary tools gathered at the school about 8 a.m. to install the new equipment and enjoy a celebratory barbecue barbecue [West Indian or South American], in the United States, traditionally an open-air gathering, political or social, in which meats are roasted whole over a pit of embers and food and drink are liberally enjoyed. . A contractor had already volunteered to take down the old equipment on his own time.

Ashley said Emblem Elementary School students and parents alike will receive their wish as a result of the donations by Emblem parents and businesses including Newhall Land and Farm Company, Woodlands by Taylor Woodrow Home Inc., Toneman Construction Inc., Tony Mattivi and Greenbelt Greenbelt, city (1990 pop. 21,096), Prince Georges co., W central Md., a residential suburb of Washington, D.C.; chartered 1937. Greenbelt was planned and built by the federal government as an experimental model community for families of modest income.  Inc.

The equipment at the playground was more than 30 years old and students had less equipment to play with after portable classrooms were installed a couple of years ago.

Ashley said that the combined efforts of Emblem's parents, the local business community and PTA members will make the dream a reality for students this school year.
