PALMDALE - Workmen toppled 22 insect-riddled, damaged or misshapen mis·shape

mis·shap
Siberian elm and black locust trees in downtown Courson Park, the city's oldest park, dating to the park's origin in the early 1950s.

The parks department will replace some of the trees to fill in bare spots in the park, but officials haven't decided how many or what varieties, said maintenance superintendent Bill Lewallen.

Some of the trees suffered from a infestation infestation /in·fes·ta·tion/ (-fes-ta´shun) parasitic attack or subsistence on the skin and/or its appendages, as by insects, mites, or ticks; sometimes used to denote parasitic invasion of the organs and tissues, as by helminths.  of insects that chew under the bark into the cambium cambium (kăm`bēəm), thin layer of generative tissue lying between the bark and the wood of a stem, most active in woody plants. The cambium produces new layers of phloem on the outside and of xylem (wood) on the inside, thus increasing  layer, interfering with the flow of sap and weakening the tree, he said.

Others had damage such as splits in the trunk from the weight of the upper branches, he said. Some trees became overcrowded o·ver·crowd

as they matured, resulting in crooked trunks as the trees tried to reach sunlight.
