TILL DEBT DO US PART.

Byline: ANNA DAY

THE soaring cost of weddings causes arguments among more than half of engaged couples.

The Office of National Statistics estimates that the average wedding now costs over pounds 25,000 - that's pounds 61 per minute.

Like Hollyoaks' Chloe, played by Mikyla Dodd, and fiance Matt, (Kristian Ealey), many couples start married life with loans or large overdrafts.

And the symptoms are made all the more acute because only 12 per cent of couples now expect their parents or in-laws to make hefty contributions to the bill.

Fay Hogg of Tesco Personal Finance says: "Getting married is the best day of most couple's lives. However, our results show that arguments over the wedding budget often make the path to the altar stressful and a cause of financial headaches."

For many, a shortfall in the wedding purse can mean facing up to the bleak prospect of having to compromise on certain aspects of their dream day.

The honeymoon destination is the most likely victim with 36 per cent saying they would scale down their plans to save funds. A surprising 15 per cent said they would not go on a honeymoon at all.

Opting for a cheaper venue and not having bridesmaids are among the most common cost-cutting choices that couples make. If you do need a loan, shop around for the best deal for your circumstances.
