TIE REPORTS PROFITS FOR SECOND QUARTER AND FIRST HALF OF 1993

SEYMOUR, Conn., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- For the second quarter of 1993 TIE/communications, Inc. reported $259,000 or $0.07 per share of net income on $24,011,000 of sales. The same period of 1992 had $249,000 or $0.06 per share of net income on slightly higher sales. These results represent a $781,000 improvement over the same six months of 1992.
Year-to-date operating income of $54,000 is an improvement of $817,000 over the comparable prior year period. "The improvement in operating income was primarily the result of cost reductions implemented in 1992 and shift away from being only a key system provider to that of a full line of business communications products, services and software," said George N. Benjamin, president and CEO. The 1992 net income reflected a decrease in amortization expense resulting from the change in amortization life of certain intangible assets implemented on April 1, 1992. The company prospectively adopted SFAS No. 109, accounting for income taxes as of Jan. 1, 1993. As a result of the year-to-date losses as of June 30, 1992, the non-cash charge in lieu of income taxes was not required. The 1993 year-to-date tax provision, consisting primarily of the charge in lieu of income taxes, was $372,000 as compared to a tax provision of $90,000 for the prior year-to-date period.
