This new software package from TI provides a virtual TI-84 calculator on your Windows or Macintosh personal computer. If your classroom is equipped with a projector and touchboard (e.g., Smartboard, Mimio, eBeam, 3M WallDisplay, etc.), you can project an image of the TI-84 onto the screen and interact directly with the image. SmartView enhances this simple concept by providing additional display options to improve viewability by students in the classroom. It can provide an enlarged view of the calculator's display, or show the functions, table, and graph screens simultaneously. It can also record and playback keystrokes, enabling teachers to create scripts with pauses and text commentary displayed on the screen as the script runs. As with TI-Connect, you can also capture screen images for pasting into other documents. When used with a projector and touchboard (3M WallDisplay at my school), SmartView can be more effective than using a calculator with a TI ViewScreen and an overhead projector. You can get a much crisper crisp·er n. One that crisps, especially a compartment in a refrigerator used for storing vegetables and keeping them fresh. , clearer display than with the ViewScreen, and the ability to point to the large buttons on the image and actually push them helps students get oriented quickly. Of course, students love to come up to the screen and run the virtual calculator themselves! If you only have a projector and no touchboard, you can still click on the image on your computer/ laptop with the mouse and cursor, or use keyboard shortcuts. However, I found this to be much slower and more error-prone than actually using a real calculator and a ViewScreen. If you use TI-83 or TI-84 calculators in your classroom and you have and use a touchboard and projector, I highly recommend TI-SmartView.
