TI AND COMPAQ REACH PATENT CROSS-LICENSE AGREEMENT

DALLAS, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) and Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced they have reached agreement on a patent cross license.
Under terms of the eight-year agreement, Compaq and TI agree to a cross license under each other's patents with balancing payments to TI, including a payment for past Compaq usage of TI patents. This catch-up payment, for which Compaq has taken sufficient reserves, will be included in TI's third-quarter financial results.
TI's personal computer system patents relate to the way in which input/output functions, such as keyboards, displays and printers, interact with the processing systems of personal computers. Compaq's patents relate to the features of many personal computers, including features in the area of power conservation techniques, password protection, and high-end graphics.
