THURSDAY NIGHT LINEUP WILL FEATURE FOOD, MUSIC AND FUN.

PALMDALE - Food from local eateries, freshly picked fruit and music ranging from big-band jazz to classic rock, as well as activities for children, are part of the fifth season of Thursday Night on the Square.

Starting next week and concluding Sept. 1, Thursday Night on the Square runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with music continuing until 9 p.m., every Thursday at Poncitlan Square on 9th Street East south of Palmdale Boulevard.

``It gives us a real flavor of what Palmdale is all about, and I think it's a fabulous way for families to come together and enjoy the High Desert evenings,'' Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford said.

Barnes & Noble storytellers will read children's stories at 6:30 p.m. A puppet show will go on at 7:30 p.m.

A different craft or activity for children will be featured weekly.

Admission is free.

Here's the weekly lineup:

--June 30, Disco Dogs - Pet owners will dress up their dogs in '70s styles for a disco parade. Children can join a leisure-suit relay and create a disco ball, glasses and a pet rock. Oldies Oldies is a generic term commonly used to describe a radio format that usually concentrates on Top 40 music from the '50s, '60s and '70s.

Oldies are typically from R&B, pop and rock music genres.

--July 7, Gone Fishin' - Youngsters can make a fishing pole and create fish from bars of soap, then toast s'mores by a campfire. Latin rock music by Persuasion.

--July 14, Boardwalk Bash - Kids can make clay figures and play old- fashioned boardwalk games, checkers and tick-tack-toe. Big-band music by the Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  Jazz Ensemble.

--July 21, California Dreamin' - The Del Mar race track, Gold Rush country, Hollywood and San Francisco's Ghirardelli Square will be showcased. R&B by Lorena Mackey and The Hi-Lites.

--July 28, Start Your Engines - Visitors can race remote-control model cars on a model track. Latin rock by Boulevard Knights.

--Aug. 4, Pajamarama Pizza Party - Youngsters can compete in pillowcase pil·low·case

--Aug. 25, Fun with Fitness - Featured will be an obstacle course and a medical checkup check·up

--Sept. 1, X Marks the Spot X Marks the Spot is a quiz and panel game that has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 since 1998 which could be likened to be a more light-hearted version of Round Britain Quiz. It was presented by the comedian and author Pete McCarthy until his death in October 2004.  - Kids can join a scavenger hunt for treasure, make an eye patch and learn pirate lingo. R&B by Bump City.
